Side Exhaust in GFX

Has anyone tried this. I have a 91 Z and thought about having side exhaust come out in front of back tires through a "nicely" cut hole in my GFX. Any suggestions, pics?

Yeah, I suggest you use 85-90 side GFX to "nicely" cut a hole in

That graphics theme looks a bit to much like the theme on the Supra in "The Fast and The Furious"
I DON'T suggest you try and get away with it.

Well by October I'm going to have to figure it out for the 82! As far as cutting up 91-92 Camaro gfx...I vote no. I have a set on my 87 and I considered then for the 82 till we discussed side exhaust. I got 85-90 bird gfx to cut up instead. If you mount them lower then factory it sould give to some more playing room. they are way longer then the Camaro gfx!

here is a pic of side exhaust from the TA nats in Dayton, OH!

To tell the truth I really like the way side exhaust looks.
Living with it every day could be a pain. I drive everywhere with my windows down and unfortunatly My side of town has doubled in density for the past 5 yrs. More stop and go traffic, more exhaust getting in the car.

i dont even think its a matter of it getting in the car- its more the fact that you are sacrificing everybit of ground clearence. Lets face it- side pipes and duals on a 3rdgen will basically take away all ground clearence....

duals are ok, they can be tucked up pretty well.

Side exhaust is fine on a car that is driven in a city or town thathas no bumps, even raods and no pot holes. Now tell me where this place is so I can move there please. New England roads are destroyed from this winter weather and my nice random tech cats are nothing pretty anymore

i think it looks good on a camaro but i don't know so much about putting them on a trans-am if i were to do somthing like that i'd put a different GFX kit on my car with a larger back bumper peice and cut like oval/square holes in the bumper and run them our like that maybe round i don't know but i think that would look kinda sweet.

if you use the oval pipes with the spin tech mufflers you shouldnt have as much of a problem with ground clearance

I don't know if you could do that without killing your ground clearance. I'm planning on mounting my exhaust a little high, so that I can cut little grooves into the rear bumper, so that the exhaust will look more stock. Redraif, from the looks of your concept car, you're building a car similiar to mine, with the Knight Rider nose. How is that working out?

i need help

ok i got shorty headers and i cut off all my exhaust and i'm running a flow master 40 off the Y-pipe and on the pic up there on the camaro how the hell did they fit that other flow master on the driver side....... i have asked every muffler shop if i can run true dual dumps under it and they all tell my i'm crazy and it won't fit

i want to know if it's possible with out hammering the floor pan.

you might have to hammer because of clearence i think GM should have put that into the design. like once you bought the car and wanted to put true duals on it because they should have known that we would want it... they could have at least made it an option. IMO anyway.

Its slow going right now...parts procurement stage ($)...Still trying to get the rollcage, so we can turn it into a Targa. As soon as we get the cage and it arrives, things will start to pic up...Yeah its the KITT nose. I always thought it was a cool nose!

I'm not sure how we will work out the side exhaust, but we will probably have to run with oval pipes under the body...I plan to run a short retagular tip...Hopefully it will work!

I was going to do a Rousch-style side-pipe set-up on my GTA, incorporating the tip into the GFX in front of the wheel. But you can't do it because the trailing arms are in the way.

Z-28 side exhause

I DID IT... YES I DID IT.. Well, I'm doing it.. I'm experimenting with fitting the exhaust... I got a pair of STAINLESS rectangle Z-28 tips from a buddy and thought about how SWEET they would be INFRONT OF THE REAR WHEELS... I used the theory behind CORVETTE exhaust, and straight side pipes... where if the curve is mandrell and slight enough .. YOU CAN have an exhaust pipe going "backwards" (relatively towards the engine) the muffler and cat-back is in the STOCK location .. but the exit pipes (in my experiment) don't curve toward the rear.. instead they curve slight forward... over the rear axle and DOWN to infront of the REAR WHEELS.. Ground clearance would only change about 2" and only RIGHT infront of the rear wheels (so the wheel is a buffer and they wont bottom out) I PLAN to document the DYNO results from regular pipes.. and MY EXPERIMENT.. if IT's EQUAL or higher.. I'LL POST PICS and INSTRUCTIONS... ANY QUESTIONS OR IDEAS ... I'm open

That's probably the best idea so far. You could easily modify the floor pan a little to add some extra clearance as well.

As an aside, I was thinking about looking into the setup that is used on the '99 (???) Cobra R Mustangs. Anyone know anything about that setup?

There are mufflers available from Dynomax and Borla, possibly others, that have the inlet and outlet on the same end, specifically for the purpose of side exhaust. I think the Spintechs may be set up like this too. This is what is used in the Mustang side exhaust kits. A similar setup was used on AAR Cudas. They do hurt performance slightly though over a conventional catback.

My 87 TA is getting duals with either side exhaust or turndowns, depending on clearances. I'm not lowering the car (its being setup for street/strip) intentionally, but the V6 springs that work best for dragracing are going to lower it some. As Redraif mentioned, oval pipe will probably be the way to go. I'm going to try to go by a NASCAR used parts place next week (going to Charlotte on business), and may grab a couple "seasoned" exhaust pipes while I'm there.

UGH. Being able to see the exhuast hanging down underneath the car looks cheap and tacky. That, and it looks rather ridiculous on a car with ground effects.

that's true exhaust hangage looks sort of hillbillish if you ask me. you almost want to give them a coat hanger or something to tie that stuff up there lol.

Well if mine works out the way I plan...some creativity should mask any low hanging typical side exhaust look. I hope I can do it so the exhaust comes thru the gfx. Not sure if I can pull it off though!
