There are a couple things you could do. First, Get under the dash and find the brown wire coming out of the steering column, that is the ACC power wire. It is hot only when the car is running. From here you have 3 options. You could either 1. Hardwire the radar detector to that wire. 2. Wire in another cig lighter somewhere. or 3. Wire the current cig lighter into brown wire.
Now for the warning
Don't take my word on the color of the wire or location. Double check a wiring diagram for YOUR car. Mine is a '92 so the wiring may not be the same. But all of the
sugestions will do what you want.
Edit: check out this site for the colors http://www.p71interceptor.com/thirdgen/alarminfo/
Brown or Orange are the wires you should use depending on when you want the detector powered.

against the law
technically they cant be.
if they were they would be infringing upon your right to recieve radio transmission or something wierd like that
thus says the pamphlet that came with mine. it quote the law.. if you like i'll try to find it.
as for hiding it..
if its not in line of sight its not gonna work. so hiding it isnt gonna work real well.

Radar detectors are illegal in VA and DC because those states passed laws. Those laws may very well be unconstitutional, but until someone fights it all the way to the supreme court, they stand. VA cops will confiscate detectors if they see them, and hit you with a fine.
There was a company in Manassas who specialized in concealed detector instsallations. I don't know if theyre still around.

Back to hiding it. Do the make a dectore that has the eye/sensor seporate from the main peice, so you can put the small "eye" on the dash, and hide the rest??
I have seen ones that have sensors in the front and back of your vehicle by the front and rear bumper, and the main unit is under the dash. I have seen them before...they run around $5-600 IIRC.

Yea they do make a unite that has a remote mountable "face" its at http://www.valentine1.com/ Car and driver tested this and says it the best out of the ones that they tested. They also advertise it a lot. I would buy it if I had the money. You can find them on eBay for great prices.

One of the Bell models is concealable. I am going to get that one for my car, has one sensor in the front, one in the back, and the display can be mounted anywhere in the car.
It is less than the Valentine V1.
Two of my friends have the Bell units, one in a 3000GT VR4, and one in a Mazda MX6.
Two of my friends have the V1 with the remote display, really cool with the arrows and Bogie counter, but it needs to be on the windshield.
I'll see if I can find out the model of the Bell unit.

VA cops can still tell that you have them even if they cant see it...They have radar detector, detectors...
I know, I got pulled for mine when I was going to Bristol last year. I had it pulled off the dash sitting on my lap and past the cop and he came after me, i wasnt speeding either.
He pulled me and asked where my radar detector was and I had already unpluged it and put it in the console box and told him that I unpluged it and put it away as soon as I crossed the NC/VA line. He told me that he knows that I had it on but would leave it on my conscience just dont be speeding. I said Okkie dokkie and never plugged it back up till I got back in NC. WHEW!!
So the VG2 crap on my Whistler wasnt worth a ****!
