Headlight conversion

Proud owner of a 1990 Formula 350. Needs new front (fenders, nose, hood). Does anyone make a conversion kit to get rid of the pop-up headlights in Firebirds? I'm thinking of going with a style very similar to the C5-R Corvette, or even, dare I say it, a 1996 Nissan 300ZX style Any help will be appreciated.

P.S. trying to remain street legal. (Chicago, go figure )

I don't think anyone does. This has come up alot on the boards. A few people have done a popup delete. It just never has come out looking good.

One friend of mine will only buy Camaros because he hates the pop-ups. So that's his main reason for prefering the Camaro over the Firebird.

Just pull a Jesse James bro, and do it yourself. That would look pretty awesome (the 300zx lights), but it sounds like you're after some kind of 'Tuner' look.... huh?

There's a reason for that, read the rules. Nothing is wrong with wanting to do something like a headlight swap. Definately dosnt make you a r*cer. The 300zx headlights have been done on a Camaro before. But the rest of the car is just plain weird to me (guy is a star treak freak). Havent seen anything on a stock bodied bird yet. Be aware that nobody sells anything that will bolt right in. So if you do try it, its going to have to be custom and it will probably cost some $$. So I say go for the wildest thing you can imagine, the C5-R Vette headlights (the pockets) would be a great idea and I think it would look really good.

I saw on TV once, there was a TA (looked like an '82 or '83) that had sorta what you are talking about, but a little different...

Instead of just clear headlights being installed in place of the pop-ups, they took the tops of the stock headlights (the body colored part) and put a flat, clear headlight under it.

When you turned the headlights on, the tops would slide back under the hood and you'd have clear, flat headlamps exposed.

I think that was a custom job though.

headlight conversion

I was thinking that I might use '91-'92 firebird headlights, recess them into the headlight location (after removing the motors etc.), The making my own housing, and, if my uncle is still in the plexiglass business, get some clear covers that are the same size as the headlight covers. I might require a '91-'92 nose though, concidering the placement of the turn signals. Gotta take care of the bodywork first.

P.S. hopefully the size of the headlights is right and it'll all fit, hopefully

I have seen it before, I think it was a link on one of the tgo forums too. It didn't look real good though. I plan on trying this at some point using projector headlights, and incorporating the parking light into the same unit. The idea being to keep the front of the car as smooth as possible, and follow all original lines. I had considered initially using a clear plastic resin to get the shape right, then seeing about getting a glass version manufactured. I just don't have the $$$$ right now...

A good solution would be to put a Camaro front end on your Firebird like I did. I'm just kidding, that's not a good solution. I do have a fire breathing chicken and I love the way it looks. Makes everyone look twice.

Those headlights look sweet.... but did you ever consider going with a T/A nose and ground effects? That would really make those headlights stand out even more.....

Just an opinion

LOL.... I know, I know, I realized that after I sent the reply.

You're headlights look sweet.... going for that 'sleepy eye' look, eh??? I'm also looking for a change. Something a little more 'modern'.... and am contemplating if I should try and fit a set of 2000 Z28 headlights that I picked up, to my 86 IROC.

It's definitely not going to be easy, and I'm not even sure if I should go through with it....
