I've heard that people get good results with a steamcleaner. I myself have tried various cleaning agents and have never found anything that did well enough to make them look like new.

I just cleaned some front belts that I got at the junkyard today. I fully extended the belts and put a small safety pin thru it so it wouldn't retract. Then I dangled the belt in a pan with warm water and dish detergent. Scrubbed the bad spots with a brush, rinsed and they are drying now. They look pretty good.
Steam cleaning would work too but I don't have one.
