WHERE to paint my car myself???

No No:nono: NOT the Iroc.

I'm getting my very first car back from my brother after 6 years. Rather than scrap the ole 86 SC, I'm gonna restore it to DD status. The paint is bad, make no bones about it. Most of it is just plain flat red NO gloss or shine for years. It's got the good ole white clouds rollin' up the hood and over the roof that I know you've all seen. So bad that the rattle can would almost (not quite) be better. I have a friend who's gonna paint it for FREE minus the cost of paint, but we don't have anywhere to do it. He doesn't do paint anymore so no more access to the booth. What do I do???

The paint does NOT have to be perfect. I want it to look nice, but I'm not going over it with a magnifying glass. Keep in mind how it looks now. Prep is not an issue, but of course, where do we paint. Some people have said that renting out a 10x20 storage space will work. You'd be a little cramped on the sides, but it'd be OK. Will that work? How about renting a booth, does anyone do that? (generally speaking of course).

does anyone have any ideas?

try to find someone with a clean as h3ll garage, you dont want any silicone or petroleum pruducts anywhere near the "paint booth" you could also buy some tarps and make a booth in your garage. id suggest wetting the floor so you dont stir up any dirt........................good luck, and post some pics when your done

Bahhhh, sorry, my fault. I forgot to mention that I don't have access to a garage. Down south it seems that a lot of homes don't have garages. My friends that do have them are either smaller than the 10x20 space that I could rent, or are big ole garages in BIG newer houses and people don't want me sprayin' paint everywhere. Even though I'd make a tarp/booth, I can understand.

So, where were we?

my friend had a portable carport (tarp sides, bottom, and top) that we used when primering my camaro. it's not the best, but it's better than doing it out in the open. it cuts down on most of the wind, and just about all of the sun (and makes it nice and cool for sanding!)

Good luck!

Car: too many ...
I'm with fyrechikyn on this one. You dont need a booth unless you're going for a show winning paintjob. I'm doing my RS in a car port, gonna use plastic tarps as a shield on all 4 corners. The key is to make sure there is NO WIND and NO CRAP floating around in the air. Wetting the ground to keep dust down is a good idea. Just make sure you dont have angry neighbors that get revenge by deciding its time to weed-whack upwind right when you start laying the first coat (damn that sucked!).

But if you do want the booth its understandable. Call local body shops and see what they say. They will usually let you rent out space at odd times. So get ready to paint the car at midnight or something. I was quoted $50 to rent a booth for 4 hours (midnight to 4 am), but the problem is its a very windy/rainy area and I know the second it leaves the booth wet (not enough time to cure) its going to get messed up. Oh well, saves me $50 I guess hehe. Dosnt matter anyway because this is a racecar paintjob ...

They let you alone in the shop at midnight? Or did they keep someone there?

I was going to paint my car in my garage; figured I'd hang up plastic and everything- but after looking at it, no way. The thing just isn't wide enough. I'd be 8 inches from the wall.

So it looks like I'll be renting a booth too, eventually... I just really liked the idea of using my own air hoses and compressor and filters and etc...

were adding an oversized 2 car garage to our house and it will be complete probably about the time or a little before i am ready to paint my car so it will be good for me.....i'm just gonna take up maybe one and a half times what the normal bay will be and put plastic sheets all over the place.......i wouldnt want to be spraying my car late at night/early in the morning...i'd probaly wake up asleep on the hood with paint all over me ;-) haha

you also have to remember that your hoses in your home air system are most of the time contaminated whereas in a paint shop they run all air through water traps to filter out all water and oil. painting you rcar at home could cause problems such as trash in the paint or "fish eyes" which are ares where silicone or any petroleum product kept the paint from covering. if you use armor all alot on your car it also might cause a proble so clean it real good with a nonsilicone cleaner
