Vinyl Repair - Do those kits work?

You know those vinyl repair kits you see advertised that have the gunk you put on the rip and you smooth it down and voila, your rip is repaired? Do they work at all? I have a small rip on my door panel and I want to know what I can do to repair it? I don't want to buy new door panels because I have the map pockets on mine and no one reproduces new panels with them. I'm looking for something cheap and easy that would work good. Thanks.

I can let you know tomorrow, I bought a permatex one today to repair a crack in my console lid. I've used their fabric kit before to repair a burn mark in a customer's seat, and it worked perfect. I've also used it to repair carpet in my old car and it worked great for that too. You just need to take the time to match the color perfect.

What did you do to your panel?

Matt

I haven't had a lot of success with the repair kits.

But, I will admit I have never been very good at that sort of stuff.

A bad combination of inability to follow directions and a general lack of patience.

That repair looks like it would be difficult to fix to me.

The door panel was like that when I bought the car.

I tried it today, and it didn't work out. I had to cut around the crack in the console lid because the vinyl had a raised lip around the crack. So the area I had to fill was approx. 1.5"x6". Because the area was so big, I couldn't get it to fill evenly. I think it would work well on a small area like what you have. On a couple small areas on my patch where it was level, the texture was matched perfectly and you couldn't tell it was repaired unless you really studied it.

If you end up trying the repair, post up some pics

Matt

BTW, if anyone has a decent console lid for sale for cheap, send me a PM or email

Maybe I could just tape it on the back side.
