I want to put a 4th gen console in my 89 bird, witha t-5 trans? I've seen it with the auto, but for a standard can I get a 6 speed console and put it in and have it fit?

Get a fourth gen console intended for the automatic, that'll put the shifter opening right where you need it. I think if you use the T-56 console, the hole will be offset to much.

No.

The 5 or 6 speed fourth gen console will be fine, it's pretty much a bolt in. I use it in mine with no issues. (And it's a camaro! Firebirds are a drop-in)

You got any pics of how it looks in there? I'm just going off what my brudda told me. He swapped an auto console out of a 96 bird into his T-5 92 RS. Sorry if I passed some misinformation

i have a 93-97 standard console in my formula and it fit like it was made for the car. it looks so natural that most folks dont notice till i mention it.
the 2 holes in the storage compt of the new console match the stock floor board holes EXACTLY!! the only mod thats needed is to cut 2 prongs on the very front of the base.
if you have pwr windows you can do what i did. i extended the window switch wires and used a dremel to cut 2 holes up by the shift pattern . it takes a lil measureing. as for the pwr mirror i cut a square hole on the side of the base. all looks factory.
ill try and get shots of my setup.

Yes you can, but it is a bit of cutting and moving the shifter around. There is another thread about it.

I bought my first one for $75 from a local Junkyard. It was an Auto so I bought a used 6 speed plate from a member on LS1.com for $45, then sold the Auto plate for $25.

The next one I got from a friend, traded my Dual Fan setup and shroud for it.

Third one came from my friends 99 SS tht he totaled.
Got that for $35 and a 96 T/A Console. had to put one back in the car since the insurance was taking the car so had to look somewhat together. My LS1 4.10 rear end and the lighted Mirrors in my Formula also came from that car.

I just ordered all the parts for the center console,an auto plate ,manual plate, glove box lid, ashtray, the plate in front of the shifter i.e traction controlwould be, and an auto shifter and the cig. lighter and the manual boot for a 99 ta and the t-handle and it was all around 435.00 plus tax. from the dealer.the auto plate was 59.00 and the manual one was 56.00 got both and will sell the one that I don't use. did this because none of the yards near me have a center console for any 4th gen bird.

one of my friends came by today so we could drop in his mew carpet from car motorsports. well in the process i got a trashed late 4th gen auto console for test to see whats needed to make it fit.
one thing i noticed is the shifter can be slid back to make it fit. it has slots for adjustment. also the E- brake needs to come forth as well. otherwise it will work.

The 3rd gen shifter sits too high and the shifter has to slide back further than the slots allow.

actually te shifter seemes fine on the hight . but as i sit here and write this im thinking there is a hight diff in the early 4th gen consoles and the early 4th gens.
the console i was using to test is a late version and the shifter clearance wasnt an issue .

I tried using my 99 Console and the the upper plate would hit the ractchet part of the shifter.
Another member used the Auto plate with his 3rd gen shifter and had to cut some of the bracing on the trans tunnel to get the shifter to sit lower.

I also tried using a 4th gen shifter, but that was even worse since the lower bracket is longer, more material towards the front of the car.

If you can get it on with little to no madification, take some pics and post them so I can see how you got it to work. I'd rather have the auto plate on the car so it looks correct.

there was some plastic framing inside the console that was giving me hassle so i pulled it out. it gave me more "play area". when i had the console scooted forward the shifter worked smoothlyand didnt hit anything, but then again it was a quick test and i didnt get the hr or 2 i needed to get a full test but from what i seen its workable.
soon as i get a full fix ill post on all the third gen boards as this is wanted mod for our interiors.

You can try Speed Automotive aka Strikers. They were good to me in the past, but I keep hearing about people getting screwed by them lately.

almost finished my 4th gen console into 3rd gen conversion using an auto plate and a 4th gen shifter also had to do a lot of mods though to get to work but all is well except for to find a place for the power mirror switch i'm thinking about putting it in the drivers door where the camaros have it. put the power window switch in front of the shifter in the plate where the traction control button is at. and the gear shift indicator works and lights up just like it is supposed to be. used the 4th gen shifter because it sits lower on the tranny tunnel than the 3rd gen shifter does and had to cut the metal brace out to do this but all is well in that area.works great and looks good too.
