What would cause 1982 305 carb. engine to run on after you turn
the key off? The car only has 31,000 miles so I wouldn't think
carbon build up in the cylinder heads would be the cause. I now
turn the engine off while still in drive ( it's an automatic ) which
stops the run on for now.

I have had this problem a long time ago on my 68 charger and if I recall right it was because of the timing was off. After replacing the distribiter shaft and set the timing problem was gone.
All I remeber was the distribiter shaft was loose even when you tighten it down you could still grab it and shake it. Something about the bearings in the shaft?

Shouldnt this be on engine tech board?

Most likley your problem is bad gas. get a bottle of the lucas fuel system treatment or some berryman fuel treatment and put it in your tank with some 93+ octane gas. that sould solve your problem. and all your promblem is, is called pre-ignition thats mostly caused by bad gas.

I agree with timeing being the place to start checking. Also if your
idell is set a little high and if your car is running hot it will cause it to run on after shutting off.My guess tho would be your timeing.
