Trans AM Seat Upholstery...

Does anyone know where I can get new seat covers for my Trans AM? I am not talking about AutoZone slip ons.... the real deal. New upholstery? I can't spend $1000.00 on the interior shop making me a set. Looking for after market replacements.
Thanks

Keep an eye on the stuff in the junk yards. Sometimes you will make a find. I got all of the seats in great condition for $60.00 out of a Firebird that looked like rolling rust on the outside.

I also took the carpet from a Camaro that only had 23,300 miles on it. The outside paint was wacked, but the interior was pristine.

Definitely check out HAWKS. The seat covers are absolutely awesome. And, you can install them yourself and save the cost of that.

Seats

Go the the Third Gen Resource link above. I bought my seat upholstery from them for less than 400 dollars. The material is already to be slipped on over your actually seats. You may need to put new foam on your seats due to deterioration though. One important note about the Third Gen seats, the headrests are tricky to get off. The way to get them off is to take a thin piece of metal, the length of a ruler and about an inch or two in width. The thin piece of metal should be flexible enough that you can slid it down the front part of the headrest post. There is a like a push pin that keeps the headrest from coming out, but by sliding the metal down, you can disengage the pin. This may take a few tries but it will slide out eventually. Hope this was informative.

Hey everyone. This was great info. I think I am gonna get the stuff from Hawks. They have exactly what I am looking for. I used to work part time in an upholstery shop so I am aware of how to get this to look right. Thanks for all the great info!!!

I went by for an estimate at an upholstry shop

I was really surprised. I can get all of my seats completely redone with fabric that matches extremely close for under 500.00. To get carpeting installed, seats recovered, door pane fabric and carpet redone, headliner, sail panels, sun visors done, the price was 995.00. It is hard to justify me doing anything myself at this price! I have seen the guys work and it is awesome. BTW my car is an '85 Trans Am. It didn't include carpet in the rear cargo area but mine is mint there so no problem.

Welcome to the boards!!!

I'd be very carefull. That price seems SUPER low. They may have mis quoted, or they may do really crappy work.

-they may do great work, and that may be the right quote.....(hope it is ), but just be careful.

...enjoy the boards, they are your friend!!!

I got a quote from a very reputable auto upholstery shop. They do fantastic work. I have the seat covers. So, for this place JUST to put them on my seats, they said $500. I'm doing it myself. But, that's the price they quoted me just for labour.

No the price is correct

A friend referred this guy to me about 12 years ago and by luck, I was shopping around. He gave me directions to his little shop but I thought it couldn't be the same place. Well, it was and the guy has been in business for 13 years at the same spot. He repaired my seats then for only about 125.00 replacing a couple of panels. This included material. I still have some scraps but not enough to do me any good.

One thing to note that might be of interest to you all. When we were looking through his fabric books, we discovered that the 90 trans am fabric (light grey) looks identical to the scraps I had from doing the seats years ago. So this will enable us to do the front seats only. The charcoal inset that is available now is a slightly different tone. Since the back seats in my car have not had sun they are dark still and with the tinted windows I have, I am hoping I don't have to redo the perfect back seats. To do the front two seats like factory including repadding, the price is 290.00. Again, I have seen his work because I have used him before. He does a lot of dealer stuff and they are known to be cheap.

I am getting estimates now on re-painting the exterior but don't know if I should do the interior first or not. The interior man said he would rather do it before the painting because he didn't want to risk the exterior getting scratched.

Here are my plans. I will post the crappy looking car when I get some photos taken. I bought it new in 1985 but it sat out and just went to pot over time.

I am going to get the interior done, exterior painted. I am thinking about putting on Boyd Coddington smoothie 17 inch wheels all the way around, 10 inch on the rear if we can fit them in and 8 inch on the front. The car will be all red (like it is now) spoilers, handles, t-top bars, locks, everything. I am also going to add a red steering wheel I have scoped out, and was thinking about adding some red accents to the interior some way or another. It is currently grey and charcoal. Anyway, this is my goal. Thanks for these boards. You guys have helped me out on other topics also since I am just diving into this again.
