Actually it seems we all have one.. a pinhole light with the dinkiest bulb I've ever seen is supposed to shine down under the dash pad. If that's the light you miss, take the dash pad off and there's a 1.3"x3/4" bulb holder (for a 1/8"x1/4" light) near the AC ducts in the center. I think it wouldn't be too bad with a high-output LED in there instead, though. As for a real light down at the ash tray level? Never seen one =\

Not all came with that light in the dash...my 84 Z and 83 SC didn't have them, nor any hole to mount one. It may have only been available on the later models.

Y'know---stupid thing...I have the optional map light in my rearview mirror, and noticed this stupid light shining straight down
whenever my lights were turned on---never realized till just now it's an ashtray/console light.
Why do I read the boards??? (see above)

Yep, sure is, last time I looked!!!
It appears option RPO code "DC4" is the inside rearview mirror with dual reading lamps. The RPO description doesn't mention the light I spoke of, though.
Both of my Camaros ('84 and '86 SC) came with "light" in the ashtray area; I believe only available on automatics. If you take off the trim plate holding the ashtray and displaying the automatic gears, there's a bulb holder underneath to light up the P-R-N-OD-D-2-1 display. Somewhere under there, there is a short fiber optic cable running from the white bulb holder to the ashtray area. It transmits light from that one bulb to the ashtray.
