It's basically the same as with normal flames, except you use either a clear with metallic or pearl, a thinned out candy color, or a slightly different shade of paint, depending on the effect you want. You usually only paint the edges of the flames as well, since subtlety is the key.

I had my car repainted this summer with ghost flames. The flames were put on after the paint but before the clear coat was sprayed. My friend who did the paint masked the flames off by hand using thin tape, I think some people use some sort of patter to do it. Silver Pearl was added to the regular color for the flames with more pearl towards the tips of the flames and fading into the factory color once you get closer to the front of the car. Then he added a color called Purple Haze to the tips of the flames to make them stand out a little more. It also gives the tips of the flames a slight purple tint in bright sunlight. These pics really don't show how good it looks in person but it will give you some idea of how it looks.

I need to do something about the ride height but not sure what to do yet. I'm going to attempt true dual exhaust first then see how much ground clearance I have after that before I lower it any.

the idea with ghost flames is that unless you look carefully at the car, you dont see them....

its a neat lil custom trick that someone can do witout having a car that screams out "LOOK AT ME!"

Here are mine. They are white pearl with gold pearl tips. He layered it on pretty good so they stand out more, but at some angles you can't see them at all.

Here's a pic where they are almost invisible-
