how bad before giving up?
I've been contemplating what to do with my car since I bought it. I love the thing, but its basically rusting to pieces. I almost have no primer left ont he underbody. Heres what I've determined can be purchased and replaced for big bucks:
floor panels, doors, hatch, hood, fenders, half quarter panels.
Here is where I'm worried, the wheel wells, hatch bottom, and under the hood. The wheel wells have been cobbled together, but they are still on their way out. My battery tray is gone, and the evap tray is held on by paint and whatever else is keeping it together.
I'm thinking once the fram dies on this, I'm going to have to part it out. But I can't stand seeing any thirdgen parted out unless its been in a *bad* accident. I can supply soem pics of the wheel wells and the battery tray area if needed. Next time i'm under the car, I'll get soem pics of the underbody.
and yes I still drive it
The pic in my users' rides section doesn't show the rust very well. I was trying to make my car as good as I could for those shots. I have a nice shot of me at homecoming where it shows the door rust.

ooo sounds pretty awful. For me part out time is when the cost of repairs exceeds the cost of buying a new car in the same condition that yours would be once all the repairs were done
Unless you're very attached to the car, I would buy a thirdgen roller (solid body, minus drivetrain), strip your car down to a bare shell, and then swap all your good parts over to the new car. That is assuming that you already have a good running car with a bad body.
I've heard alot of people on the boards able to pick these up for dirt cheap. Under $600 should definately be attainable

im thinkin the new 3rd gen idea would be cheaper...u can find em inthe paper for cheap and even some mildly built for less than what it would cost to get all new panels..install and paint them..jus my 2 cents

I'm thinking new Firebird too... and keeping my current one for a beater until it dies
I still need to keep it going for about 4 years though
