It's been awhile since I have done this, but I seem to remember that you just line up the piece with the round hole and push it in place towards the front of the car. There should be a tang on the top that lines up with rectangular opening in the bracket to keep it straight.

well, i got it to sit in the circle opening now. but i found out why it popped out in the first place. the two clips that hold it in place when you shift from another gear INTO park broke off. you can shift out of park however. so, i used a adhesive sealant to stop it from backing out, do you think this should work?

It is a temporary fix at best, however I would strongly suggest spending the bucks to buy a new one. I don't think that you would like the nightmare of it popping out again at the wrong time.
