Lower shift boot

Hey all sorry if this is in the wrong section.

i just installed a hurst shifter in my 85 z28 and i had to purchese a new lower shift boot. i noticed the shifter sits a little higher then the stock one so when i went to install the shift boot it was fully extended instead of being sorta flat and now the car is poping out of 1st and 3rd gear

with the boot on the stick is tight and when i took it off it felt fine
i tried pushing the boot as low as i can below the handle bolts to make it flatten out but it is still sorta high up.

i thought maybe it was beacuse the boot was new and the rubber was stiff and maybe in the summer it will soften up.

anyone have this problem? if so how did you fix it?

thanks
