Picture of front seat w/out cover...

Anybody happen to have a picture of one of your front seats without the factory cover on? I'd like to see what just the foam cushions look like.

Ok, ok, ok, I got the point. Let me try something different....

For anybody who has taken the factory coverings off of their front seats:

Are the bolsters (on the sides of the bottom seat cushions) separate pieces of foam from the main center section? I'm trying to figure out through the tear in my seat if the foam is damaged. I can see in between the butt bolster and the center cushion to part of the metal seat structure. The gap looks straight and nice, like it is supposed to be there and is just the seam between two separate pieces of foam. I hope that this is the case. I'm worried though that the entire seat bottom is supposed to be one piece of foam though, and mine has broken down over time, creating this gap.

Any takers?

On my '82's base seats the foam was one piece... Too bad I didn't take any pictures

It depends on the seat type to some extent. With the GTA articulating seats the seat cushions have a split towards the front of the seat for the knee supports/lumbar,but on most seats the cushion is one piece.Same for the seat back(1 piece).

Thanks for the input so far. I'm not sure what's up with that list of hoods though ...

I guess I should clarify some. My seats are stock 87 Trans Am seats, not the articulating GTA style. Actually, I'm gonna run outside, take a picture, and give another look through the tears to see what I can see.

Hmmm, didn't there used to be an "attach image" option for adding pics without previously having them online?

Somebody must have updated the site since I tried before
Thanks for showing me where it was, don't know how I missed it.

Here's a pic showing the extend of the damage in the seam where the driver's side bolster and the horizontal seat cushion meet. It's hard to see, but there is a gap in the foam running front to back. I guess it's going to be reconstruction or replacement before I can recover these. I'll have to cut open the rip to get a better look at it. I was hoping to hear "It's ok, the cushion is multiple pieces, that's how it is supposed to look". Wishful thinking, huh?

You might be able to hold that together with some RTV silicone.

The cushion looks to be pretty well in tact. That thin little piece of foam that is ripped is part of the cover, not the cushion.

Yeah, it's hard to see since I had to shrink the pic so much. The questionable area I've been trying to see is actually beneath the white gauze like material. I hate to cut into it to see since that's the only thing holding it together at this point. I guess it's just something I need to figure out on my own and not be so hesitant. There's not much I can hurt with it looking this bad...

Hi,

I have had my seats apart. The foam behind the white cheesecloth is the seat back foam. It looks split. The edge of the seat frame is there and causes the foam to be cut. The part number imprinted on the foam for both the drivers side and the passenger side seats was the same. You can use the passenger seat foam out of another car and put it in your driver's side seat.

89, Great info!

It did appear that the foam has split through to the seat frame. Could you clarify though....my picture is of the seat bottom, not the seat back. You say that the backs are the same P/N? Or are the bottoms the same P/N. I hope the bottoms are, that would make it easier to find a good replacement to recover.

One other thing, searching through past threads, some people say that swapping drivers side seats with passenger side seats doesn't quite work (that they end up closer to the center console or something). Maybe this doesn't apply when removing the foam...

p.s. since it is dark and raining outside, the bolt pattern to mount your seat brackets to the floor wouldn't be approximately 16" x 11.5", would it? It didn't seem quite that big when I tried to measure tonight.

Hi,

Yes, the seat bottom foam, seat back foam, seat bottom frames, are universal to the left and the right sides both. Same part number for either side.

Hi,

Remember, the seat back adjustment levers are on the door sides of each seat. So, putting the drivers side seat assembly on the passenger side for example would put the lever next to the console instead of next to the door.

With some hog rings and a pair of hog ring pliers, you can use many of the pieces that make up a mint passenger seat on a drivers seat.

On this topic, Are the seat frames the same between PMD seats from a '82 T/A and newer T/A's '85-'92(non-GTA). Reason I ask, is because I need seat bottoms for the set of PMD's I'm recovering. Would newer seat frames work with the PMD bottom foam?

thanks,
Jason
