Poly Bumper Question
Poly Bumper Question
I have a complete set of Trans am ground effects and I want to know the easiest way to get the paint off... do I have to sand and sand until I get somewhere, or are there strippers made especialy for eurethane I might be able to pick up? If I do have to sand it all off, what is the best and easiest way to do it? grit recomendations? do I have to go ALL the way to the yellow eurethane, or is it ok to just sand some of the old paint of and prime them? I dont want to do a half *** job though

You need to get rid of any cracking paint. They make some stuff i beleive its called rubber bumper striper at most parts stores, it doesn't always work as good though. You want to stay away from agressive grits on the urathane, not sure what girt to recommend though.
Prolly stick with like a 400 grit, right? also, the bumper cover has a small crack in it the corner of one of the fog lights... I think I saw someone mention something like a bumper repair kit? or could I use bondo? I can see bondo on a flexible part like that becoming a real pain in the *** tho. anyway, thanks for the help.
PS... might have that center brake light housing you are looking for.... I will have to look through my basement tomorow, but I am almost positive I have one.

don't use bondo, it'll chip off and crack if the bumper flexes. 400 grit paper will get gumed up to fast to get any real work done. strippers are a mess and i've not found one that don't eat the poly. also after you have it all saned down make sure theres no cracks in the poly, other wise the paint will crack right where the poly did..
i've been using a DA sander with 180 grip paper, and going all the way down. just have to make sure you keep moving around or you may burn a spot on your poly bumber. i've been able to get most of it with the DA, but some places are just to tight and have to get them by hand.

The urethante/bumper paint stripper is pretty much useless unless your bumper was painted with water colors. That stuff barely softened up the paint on the new bumper. Im gonna take a DA sander to it carefully.

dont really wanna spend the money to be honest... besides the small crack in the foglight area, the bumper is perfect, it still have the perfect shape and lined up great with the body... I basically got it for free too
