hvac controls face removal

ok, about a year a ago my car was broken into. the guy ripped out my stereo and gouged the face of me HVAC controls. I ordered a replacement from year one, but it is slightly different. the one in the car before had a dull black on the face and had clear spots in it to see the words through it. the new one has a clear face over the whole thing with all the black and words under it. the thing that bugged me is that there appears to be moisture or some sort of grease under the clear plastic face so it doesn't look that good. I want to take the clear plastic face off and clean it, but I can't figure out how to get it off. I see there are plastic tabs holding it on and the big **** comes off, but the slide ***** don't come off!!!!, so if anybody knows how to take this off please help me

What you are seeing is actually the adhesive I am betting. Mine showed all kinds of wear on the face and I just got a mint one out of the junkyard.

actually I got a corner of the platic cover lifted and slid a piece of paper towel under there and was able to get some of it out, like an oil or something, I just need to be able to remove that plastic cover to wipe all of it off. besides to put on those white overlays that they sell don't you have to remove these? I am not putting one of those on but that would be the same procdure to get it off.

Wow, old topic, but I'm having the same problem getting the face off. Did you run across a solution?

Re: hvac controls face removal

In my case, there is nothing at all wrong with the unit, I'm just looking to reprint the lettering on the faceplate in a different color. I've gotten the fan control **** off, but the slider ***** seem almost welded! lol. Every other vehicle I've ever had, they just pull right off there. I've pulled so hard on these that I pulled the whole slider arm out half an inch (since it mounts on rivets in oval tracks to let it move) and had to push it back in to normal... thought I broke it for good... hahaha. If anyone does know how to get those super ***** off there, I'd appreciate a shout.
