Fiberglass Hood Struts
Anyone found any hood struts that work with a Fiberglass hood? I have a 4th Gen style hood for my 89 GTA and I need some struts that will work with it. Thanks!

Using my stock 82 struts that are about 4-5 years old now. The fiberglass hood is about the same weight as the stock composite hood. Just got this on yesterday

Why would you need new struts for a fiberglass hood. Isn't fiberglass lighter then the alloy hoods on our cars?

Scottland, just want to be sure, you have a fiberglass hood?
Thanks to everyone! I really don't like prop rods.

I checked at many different Autozones, and they never listed it. Maybe it is new to them. I just broke down and got the ones from GM. Have not had any problems with them or the hood.

I went to Napa, Autozone and O'Reilly's, none of them had the struts for the plastic hood, only the steel one. I got them from the local Chevy dealer, $44 each!

I have a fiberglass hood and could not find any struts for it so I just replaced one of my struts with the Steel Hood strut and left the other old strut in. Seems to work fine.

huh, i dunno, actually i think it was more like about 6 months ago when i replaced them, but i just asked for hood struts for my '82 camaro, and i brought an old one with me for comparison. they had to direct me to another autozone to get them, but the bill was only like 31 dollars for both.
good luck finding them.
good luck finding them.
Keep me in mind....
Mine are new (2years) GM originals that won't hold up the IROC-Z hood anymore. They lost their support somewhere. They look brand new. I am thinking about replacing mine with more new ones. I haven't decided on when yet, but trying to hold a hood up at a car show is annoying.
They worked as recently as last May when I went to Atlanta. From there.....

Heh the idoit charged me for actual struts thats why it was 33.99 each.. The 82 hood struts came up as 16.00 each, I didn't buy em yet though.
I finally replaced my hood struts. The old ones are GM originals and might have the strength you guys with fiberglass hoods are looking for. They look brand new and if anyone wants them, let me know.

Scott, the struts you have are orginal struts that will not hold up a steel hood? If so, I could problably use them, I'm guessing they should hold up the glass hood. I've just been really lazy and I'm not sure when I'm gonna get to a junk yard
They are strong enough to hold the steel hold if I set it where I want the hood and hold it for a few seconds. If I just lift it up and let go, it will gradually fall. Are these still strong enough for the glass hood?
I finally went aftermarket. I've paid dearly to keep this car bone stock, but the GM struts aren't lasting and the Fuel Pump Relay get replaced annually. I bought a new FP relay also.
Dealer charge for struts - $60 each (when I bought these)
Dealer charge for FP relay - $26. The last relay I bought was $14.
I went to Pep Boys and the struts were $16 each and the relay was $11.50.

I have new hood struts on my car as well with the fiberglass ram air 2 hood. Will the struts that you guys are talking about for the camaro work on the firebird? I would think they would since most parts on both cars are interchangeable.
