Fiberglass headliner?
I had this idea I was playing around with to pick up an extra headliner board from a junkyard, removing the cloth and foam stuff, coating it with fiberglass and then painting it to match my body color. Has anyone tried anything like this before? One of my concerns would be added weight but I don't think a thin layer would make enough weight to have the headliner fall down. Any ideas or opinions are welcome even if you think I'm being an idiot.

Well since no one brought up any reason for me not to try I think I'm gonna give it a shot if I can find a decent headliner board. I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Hey formula, I had the same great idea pop into my head, have not done it yet, still new to fiberglass. my headliner starting drooping so for the time being i recovered it in speaker carpet. I wanted to make my headliner hard and shiny after painted. Keep in touch with progress as I will also. Good Luck 2 Ya

Well when I re covered my headliner the board was broken so I brushed on a good bit of resin all over the board and covered it with a fiberglass cloth. Then brushed on more resin. Let set up a few days then covered it with cloth, but it could of at that point been sanded and painted.

Looks good aviator, you said yours could have been sanded and painted, was it sturdy? Or was it still a limp piecec of fiberboard? Also have you or anyone else glassed over the plastic pieces in our cars (rear hatch plastics, plastic around sails, the dash? Or should these just be sanded and painted? thanks for the help

It turned out like a solid peice of fiberglass, it was rigid, if I was going to do a finish paint on it instead of covering it with cloth I would of done one more layer of glass mat to help the size so it didn't have gaps at the a piller that the foam and cloth fills. I would of had to to sand it down smooth and bondo and block sand but it would of been smooth. I sanded it relatively smooth but 1/4 inch foam I knew I could get away with it being rough.

I haven't been able to find a good headliner board to work with so this experiment might have to go on hold for me. The only other option I could think of is to buy an ABS headliner and then cover the one I have in there now, if it doesn't work I could throw in the ABS, if it did work I could just sell the ABS to someone on the boards or something.
