I put mine on the A-pillar, doesn't block the view at all and it's a 5" tach.

That's one reason I'm glad I don't have a camaro. I had having tachs and/or guages sticking out in the middle of nowhere obtrusive like that. Mine'll be mounting in place of the stock one in the dash.

The previous owner of my car installed a 5" Monster Tach right above the drivers side middle A/C vents on the dash. I completely hate it. It blocks my view of the road and gives me some kind of "drag racer" look or something (this is what other people have told me lol). I guess its cool if you want the shift light to blind you. I would have removed it already, but I plan to do a 4th gen T/A interior swap soon, so I'm just leaving it like this until I pull everything out to do the swap (too lazy to rewire the stock tach).

Here's how it looks from the outside:

Another pic of the inside (sort of):

dead center / dash. So I can keep my eyes on the road. Best part of that led tach as its redline is right on. Where most others arnt even close.

That is a vacuum gauge on the left. Its hooked into the EGR circut and used like a ecno gauge. It only reads / shows load vac when the pedal is used. I could of ran it off straight vacuum but...

just to clarify, the car isn't driven on the road. I bracket race with it, and with a manual transmission, I like the tach right where it is.

tell me something..why do some of you feel you need a montrous tach?? cause its easier to see? cause by the place some of you put them it would be harder to see there i think...

I think it looks so bad to see 2 tachs on a car..if i had too id put it in the stock place

i mean i just dont get it sometimes like bone stock cars will have a huge tach on the dash...its almost like they do it for the "drag racer i have a fast car look"

Don't have a picture, but I cut out the stock tach, and place a 5" Auto Meter Tach in it's place, with the light mounted right under the vents.

the need for a tach in these cars is obvious... the stock tachs suck.

why the pre 90 camaro people decided to keep the sucky tach too, is beyond me.

old camaro:

my 91 doesnt need a tach. i have a discreet shift light for when im driving her all out, and a rev limiter if i screw up. nothing more is needed.

ok well i understand replacing the stock tach with one that has a shift light and a over rev limiter

out of curiousity...how do u hook up a tachometer...my truck does not have one and im considering buying a cheap $30-40 one from advanced auto and was just wonderin if its alot of work to install one.

stand alone shift lights are a quarter of the price of the tachs, and they are much easier to mount. so i dont get it either.

also, they dont give you over rev protection.. they just tell you how fast the motor is going. you need a rev limiter (a seperate device) or a ignition box that has one.

its just one wire that goes to the coil signal. your truck has a tach hookup, the ECM still needs to know the RPMs, even if the dash doesnt have a tach..
you can just tap into that wire.

hookup is easy.
+12 ignition power (tach doesnt have to be on when engine is off)
ground
tach signal wire (usually green)
(optional) backlight hookup... so you can see at night.

wire thoes up, then mount it. pretty easy.

not as bad as the LS1 cars.

the LS1 cars gauge cluster gets its info from a databus.. so theres less wires going between the gauges and ECM, however, theres a delay as the ECM gets the data, streams it to the cluster, the cluster decodes it, and the tach moves.

this is why on a LS1 car, the rev limiter seems to hit "early"... before the tach reads redline... well that and the engine still feels like it wants to pull when it hits it.

According to my datalogs, I was shifting a 6400-6500 RPM when the stock tach said 5500. Before I figured it out, I always wondered why it stopped pulling like I was standing still. I'm guessing the 165k mile valve springs were bouncing around like jelly.

I guess GM made the motor pretty stout though, that's quite a bit past the stock redline.

For me the stock tach is allways behind my arm or the wheel spoke. I hate looking for it and watching the road. I also do not like the monster round tachs. Why I jumpped all over that sunpro led tach. Its very easy to see and small enough to put right in my line of sight. Works out real nice.

But know that they stopped making them tachs like mine two years ago and the supply is getting real low. One day they will all be gone.

It takes a lot of cutting. Just grab a dremel and go to town. You'll also need to get a new oil pressure gauge.

The gauge cluster is one big unit, that is wired up with a PCB(printed circuit board) so when you cut, just make sure you cut around all the leads in the curcuit board for the other gauges.

i did it with no cutting.

i also mounted a tach that was ment to be on the little pedestal stand.. it wasnt a indash tach.

take off the front torx screws that you see around the gauges.

then pull the black plastic off

theres small screws holding the clear plastic in.... take thoes out, the lift the plastic out.

do the same for the black sheetmetal thatmakes the gauges look seperate.

notice there are 2 green plastic circles over the turn signals... make sure thoes are there when you put it back, or they wont be green.

you can now take out the 3 screws holding the tach in. pull it straight out... its just clipped in there..

now take a small drill bit or knife, and make a hole at the bottom of the white plastic.. just big enough for the wires to come thru... if you're near the bottom corner, it wont effect anything..

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO JUST SLIP THE STOCK TACH BACK IN..

now take a piece of sheetmetal.. bend it so it has a arch to it.
now that its bent, cut a circle in it. the circle should be round, even though its in a arch. make it so that the tach bearly slips on it. i made a circle that was close, then made some small snips around the edge and folded the edge back. to the inside of the arch.

now you have a choice... you can leave the clear plastic out so nothing is modifyed, or, you can cut off the part that goes over the tach.
begin putting the black sheetmetal cover on.. then the cut clear plastic if you did that
put the sheetmetal in place of where the clear plastic was...

now put the tach wires thru the black plastic outer cover, thru the sheetmetal, then reach in and stuff them down the hole in the white gauge cluster backing. .

now put the gauge thru the black plastic outer cover, then put the sheetmetal on thegauge.

as you tighen the cover, it flattens the arched sheetmetal... the sheetmetals hole changes to a oval... pinching down on the gauge. it will never move on yea, trust me, its a tight fit.

later on, you can just pull it out, drop the old gauge back in, and you're set.

side note:
you do loose the oil pressure gauge doing this, so you need to put a new gauge in somewhere else.

Mrdude, the Ultra-lite gauge was way to big to fit where the stock tach once was, it took a lot of cutting to get it to fit inside.

If i ever need to go back to stock, i bought an extra cluster for $20

Got mine in yesterday; put it in front of the cigarette lighter. Removed the lighter and made a small aluminum circle plate to go over the opening and then plastic welded it in place. Made it look pretty good. Also had to fab the bracket for it, which still req's some finish sanding and some flat black paint. It's up and functional though
