Rust Removal Expensive?
Hey guys, I'm looking to buy an 90 IROC but I found out it has extensive rust on the undercarriage and in the engine bay. I'm not sure how bad it is, but it looks like the best way to get to it would be to remove the engine so I can treat it all. How hard or expensive is this? Are there services that will do this?
I'm considering not buying the car because of this, but I might if he will take 1600 for it.
Would it take a few hundred to remove and treat all rust?
Thanks, Suke

Anyways, the cost of rust repair varies depending on the location. Although I had mainly floorboard and rear wheel well rust, I still think Engine Bay rust is not a good thing and shouldn't be taken upon lightly. And as far as price, I would add another digit to your figures. Rust repair involves welding in patch panels or sheetmetal and is very time consuming. But, If it is only surface rust, your in luck. All you would have to do is wire wheel/grind it down and invest in some por15. You should post some pictures or explain a little more about the extent of the rust.

Hmm I just learned bout this POR15 stuff using the search, seems promising but expensive and time consuming, I may consider buying the car if I am able to do this POR15 system on it.
I'd probably have to get the car on a lift and remove the engine to get it all, but I wouldnt be able to do a "sandwich" of por15 with rust in between, just the por15 on top of the rust.
If I were to do it myself I think I would do that or Rhino Lining, hmm... or what bout both! overkill? haha, good protection tho right...
But I was wondering what you guys have already paid to get rust removed by an autobody shop, I would assume they would get the job done better than I could.

my advice is dont buy the car. if your thinking $300 to make ol' rusty a brand new car (no rust) w/ labor , your out of your mind.
seriously dont buy the car. if its that bad (floor pan and engine compartment) you'll end up with a rust bucket thats too expensive to fix. ill guarantee you there are more rustouts on it. it's just a chevy thing.

Depends on how bad it is but from the way you had described...
You would have to know somebody or they owe you a favor to get the work done that cheaply.Few hundred? Try a couple thousand.
