there have been a couple posts about this.

either somebody actually tried this, or they came close to trying it but decided not to, i can't remember which. anyway, the reason why it probably wouldn't work is because body flex would create cracks in the smoothed over areas. if somebody were to create a body panel that was one piece, that would work fine, but just bondo-ing (or whatever you were thinking of using) over the seams and painting over them wouldn't work, because stress cracks would form

it'd be cool to see a photoshop or something of how it would look though

yea that would be a good idea can anyone do it?

i was planning on havin it fused together. kinda like a plastic weld on the bumpers and fused with a realy strong epoxy on the doors and such as lord fuser or somthing. but i think lord fuser is only for metal to metal welds. not sure thats why i thought i would ask if it been done. and i wouldnt use bond definatly fiberglass to avoide cracking.

put a cheap paint job on it, any power to the body and you'd have some nice stress cracks.

Ive seen pics of someone who effectively molded the bumper cover into the front 1/4 dont know how well it held up after but it was a show car anyways so i doubt it saw much stress. And dont even think of trying to smooth over the gfx cause they just flex way too much

If you do a search on my UserID you'll probably stumble over a couple of posts on this. Bottom line, 'fusing' metal to plastic isn't going to work. You're going to have to go to fiberglass fenders, fiberglass front nose, fiberglass quarterpanels and fiberglass bumper - and after all of that expense it MIGHT work. For a daily driver the odds are it's going to crack. I spent a good amount of time trying all kinds of epoxies/fiberglass/bondo/etc over several years - and using all fiberglass is the only way I can actually see it working.

My two cents and it's worth what it cost ya.

My Z28 spoiler was molded onto the body with fiberglass putty. There are some pics of it in this thread:

Wait a minute, Mustang starship tail lights on a thirdgen? Thats just wrong. C'mon, how can you respect yourself after installing Mustang tail lights AND a wing like that on your car? After doing such nice body and paint work to your car, how could you?

Yeah, thanks for the import part lesson. However, I already know what they are called. What I was getting at is that they are for a 79-93 Ford Mustang. I guess you were so jazzed to see starship tail lights (altezza) on a car that they don't belong on, that you didn't bother to notice that they don't even pretend to fit right. Look closely and you'll see, they are for a fox body Mustang.

Since this is a thirdgen website, it would be great if people had the decency to cut the Bush/cheney crap in their posts....no offense.

I agree. This is not a political site, and unless we want to start an argument, it's doesn't really belong here.

Who cares if it came from a Mustang sheesh. Would you be happier if he used lights from an Import? How about instead of going off topic on this thread, PM him with your concerns. This thread is about molding the bodyparts together.

I plan to mold my rear bumper, sideskirts, and front clip on my 91Z. I will be keeping the stock 91-92 GFX. I dont have good enough bodywork skills to do it myself, so I will be taking it to a local shop for prep/paint. I'm going to be using some of the tricks I learned from the minitruck scene so I dont think my car will be cracking or creasing. The key is to support the panels you are molding together. If you've ever seen anyone properly weld and shave the tailgate on a truck, you'll see that they build supports on the inside of the bed. I will be doing the same thing with my 91Z, building supports on the inside of the fenders/body pieces/etc. Then once everything is secure, then it goes to the shop to get molded and painted. If you just tried to mold the stuff together without building supports, then yes expect it to crack or crease as the panels vibrate or move when you hit a bump in the road or apply WOT.

The issue is not whether the parts have enough support, but rather the difference of substrates.
Bonding plastic to steel and spanning the gap without everything coming apart is a very tricky thing. Obviously some are doing it , hence the photos and feedback... I really wouldn't consider it a longterm repair, but then we're constantly breathing new life into these beasts, aren't we?

My friend's S-10 has a seemless rear. He filled the tailgate and bumper. It looks pretty awesome and very clean. He had to make his own bumper out of steel and then welded it all together. It's not such a good idea to try to seal the gap between urathane and steel or other mismatched materials.
