floor pan restoration

i just went to an auto welding (greenville auto welding) and they estimated for me a price for restoring my floor pan. now, my floor pan is in very bad condition. this is what it will be needing.

"rebuild driverside inner rocker, rebuild floor to firewall pan, replace front floor with flat sheet metal, rebuild driver side tunnel, all work is primed, sealed, rustproofed". $895

i have no pics. but does this seem like a fair price to you guys. don't forget, my driver side looks like fred flinstone's car from rot.

If you can't weld yourself, I'd pay it. If they do good work and the rust is fixed properly that is priceless to me. You can't put a price tag on the integrity of your car.

If you scroll down a bit on the main "body and interior" board, there's a thread with pics which I posted on my floorboard repairs. Judging from the sound of yours, they are in worse shape than mine, as mine didn't require rebuilding the transmission tunnel, but we did have to fabricate an inner rocker. $900 seems like a very fair price IMO. I would pay it if a friend and I hadn't done it ourselves.

You could pick up a decent mig for $400, all the sheetmetal you need for $100, and spend the extra $400 on headers and exhaust or something. Sheetmetal isn't really hard to work, especially when it'll be covered by thick paint on one side, and carpet on the other.

Plus if you do it this way you can take pride in a job well done

True...but that is a big job for a newbie. I know I wouldn't do it without someone who knows what they were doing with me.

I was going to go that route, but I found it about 100% easier with a pre-formed piece. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend buying a board vs. fabrication.

like I said find someone with the tools. Cut it out of a junkyard and find someone to weld it in. Tim knows how to do all that stuff but you dont really know each other. Id say find someone good with sheet metal. Have them cut it out of a yard and help you put it in.

Your gonna spend 1000.00 on your floorboards? I hope you dont plan on selling this car still. LOL

Anyway. let us know.

Nate

You can get both preformed pans for like 400 if you can borrow a welder, but you would still have to do something about the rocker panel, yea I would probably let them do it.
