1989 IROC Hatchback problem

Hello, I;m new to this forum so any help would be appreciated. I just got an '89 IROC-Z 305 TBI and I have a problem with the hatchback. When closing it, the motor just keeps running but the lid won't stay shut. The release seems to work fine, though. I tried clamping a screwdriver in there to simulate the hatch being closed. It did the same thing. The screwdriver was clamped but the hatchback motor kept running. The release worked fine. Any ideas?

The gear nut on it or the housing is broken more than likely if it keeps running. Pull the trim off the rear and look at it at the bottom of it there is a plastic housing, it gets broken if someone slams the hatch. It breaks at the srews so it may be hard to see, also the gear nut inside of the housing can get broken or striped and cause the same problem. It would be a good idea to replace it and make sure to grease it up good.

Is it actually grabing the screwdriver or hatch just not pulling it down right.
