Ideas for paint color (on a Trans AM)

I got an 86 TA. A guy I know might be able to hook me up with a custom paint job, cause he's a really tight friend of my family. He works at custom auto place (and he's there sun up to sun down).

What would be a really cool looking and unique color to see on a trans am... any ideas guys???

so far I'm thinking dark charcoal grey.

if you're liking the idea of charcoal grays this would be my recommendation. Take a look at as many factory charcoal colored cars on the road today, as we all know this is now a very popular color, which makes it nearly perfect for the majority of custom paints jobs, and offers a very "modern" twist to an older vehicle.

Find yourself a factory new color to choose, have your friend pick that color up for you, and spray your car with it. Then, if you happen to like racing strips, i'd recommend a set to compliment the factory looking gray, make the stripes in a second gray, lighter or darker than the body color by a couple shades depending on how dark or light your body color is going to be. Dark body, light stripes, light body, darker stripes.

Keep the colors somewhat close however different enough that they'll stand out. I'd outline them with a 1/4" pinstripe of the same color around the edges of the stripes.

A set of black pinstripes going the length of the car wouldnt look bad but, those are normally up to people's specific taste (some like em, some don't) if you're going to put a set on, it'd be nice to have them painted on. Give a small pontiac symbol somewhere along the line also, as it'll give a more factory appearance.

The perfect custom paintjob doesn't look "custom" instead, it looks like the factory gave you a beautiful paintjob, and you've maintained it for the past 15 years. The other part is that you picked the best paint color 15 years ago, and at this time, the color looks 100% modern.

maybe this is wrong, but...

when I was talking about the charcoal grey this is where I got the idea...

Hopefully it looks familiar.

I really like the color on those Fords. I like gray because it won't stand out too much to cops. bright yellow and red are nice, but I like to drive fast and eye spanking colors like orange, red, yellow, etc. make cops think they're asking for it

I shouldn't talk... the current color is dark red

a bright color I would like... a really nice deep bright blue. I'll see if I can find an example

as a matter of personal opinion, i find that 3rd gens in general look horrible in lighter / flashy colors.

Ever seen an ugly black 3rd gen? Me neither hehe. Personally I like the dark factory colors given to the 4th gens.

Also I'd like to say that our cars look SO much cooler at night than they do during the day, has anyone else noticed that? I was driving along in my beater truck last night and past by a 3rd gen camaro, I just stared it was so beautiful at night with the t-tops down, and the noticeable-but-not-flashy factory salad shooter rims.

There's also a green 3rd gen camaro rollin around town here that I want to talk to, it's a 4th gen green, like dark hunter green I guess, with tan/goldish factory stripings on the side of the car, totally sexy.

Again, a vote for anything that is dark colored!

I can't remember the name, but there was an orangy-red color used on very early '70s Trans Ams. Its really nice! Kinda like the Hugger Orange used on the '69 Camaro, but a little different.

That TA color (or '69 Hugger Orange) with some white to set it off, like stripes or something, would be absolutely beautiful!!!

...Something like this. This is a bad pic of the orange though. It should be darker and redder, it should look like the orange in my avatar (the 427 thing). See how well that works with white?

I can see it man... thats nice. that orange would look bad as hell, but its not really me. when I think about it that would be an awsome color, but too flashy for what I'm going for.

SellmanB: I agree with you. bright colors are more well suited to sports cars (not that 3rd gens aren't sports cars), but if somebody said name a sports car camaro/ TA wouldn't come to mind. (least not right away).

Our cars are def performance machines, but they are really in their own class. they aint Testerossas, or Corvettes or Lambos. I agree... a non fast chill color is what I would like to see on my car. A bright red, yellow, etc would be nice but black or dark green looks natural on these cars. its the "bad a**" look.

thing is you see a fair amount of dark green and a tone of black 3rdgens. I want somethin really chill and unique, but at the same time it should make the car look "bad".

its probably all good... just as long as nobody uses two colors that look like crap. I saw a really nasty Z28 at a movie theater parking lot... deep purple with lime green stripes. the body look mint... but then the guy had to go and custom paint crap all over his ride.

That is called Midnight Blue, it's the color that I'm gunna paint my Berlinetta next year . If you have good skills with paintshop then you could color match that and stick it on a pic of your car to see how it looks i think.

if I put a fuzzy or kinda sprayed red stripe on the side of my car it would look like a can of Dr. Pepper.

I didnt even notice the resemblance till today when I was installing new seats in my car and then I put my Dr Pepper on the hood.:lala:

you mean that 70 Z28? that color is tight. I'm not sure how the stripes would look on a 86 TA. maybe you were refering to something diff.

OH YEAH... that's the car I'm referring to w/ the Cortez Silver Paint... and definitely NOT the stripe package on a TA... but, if the ground effects and window moldings were gloss black (shiny as a mirror), that would kick serious *** !!

I'm just trying to picture it on my car.

its called "Admiral Blue Metallic"

NICE color...
My first 3 Camaros were dark blue... I've always loved that color.

Something out of the ordinary was in order for my '70, that's why it's Cortez Silver w/ the Black Z28 Stripes !!

Use your heart's eye to choose the color you want (worked for me).

Good Luck.
