Rear tail lights -- fugly

well i hope that image worked, it's livewire's car if you're wondering...

anyways, I was wondering if anyone's ever done something to make the "useless block" in the tail lights (the housing for the license plate lights) flush, or not noticeable and tacky? My car is white right now, and those are gray and stick out like a sore thumb. I plan to paint the car after I get the new engine put in and car's reliability isnt so much of a question... does just smoothing the texture out of it, and then painting it body color look good? Or has anyone done something unique with these that make it useful as well as good looking?

I did a search (how i found the pic lol) and didnt come up with anything in particular.
