A while ago I measured for my cowl induction hood and came up with 6 inches(string taped across the fenders in front of the air cleaner and measured up from there). Every company is telling me that I have to run a 6 inch hood, but some of the people on this site are claming that I can get away with a 3-4 inch depending on what I do with my carb spacer and air cleaner element height. I tried to take some pics with a crappy AOL digicam to give you somewhat of an idea of what I have. Here is the setup again
Performer RPM Air Gap manifold, 1 inch phenolic carb spacer(4 hole) 14x5 K&N filter with a 1.5 inch drop base.

The first pic above is looking out of the front window. This second pic was taken from the passenger side fender. you can see the firewall lip behind the distributor.

From the pictures it looks like you will be able to get away with a 4 inch hood, it will be close but should work. At least from what I can tell with the angles that you have. Something else you could try is to see if anybody local has a take off hood and see how it fits on yours. Just an idea.

After looking at the pics again I noticed that the firwall lip is about the middle of your filter. So figure 2.5 inches plus another 1/2 inch for the lid and you have 3 inches. So to be on the safe side got to your local performace shop and see if they have a 4 inch hood and verify that it is more than 3 inches from the inside line. Or take the suggestion I mentioned earlier.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Well, I think that I am just going to bite the bullet and order the 3 inch cowl induction hood for VISIBILITY purposes and then drop the size of the air cleaner element to say a 14x4 or whatever size that it will need to fit(probably a 14x3 will be the smallest I should need to run). Hmm, that brings me to another question. Time for a new topic.

when i built my 400 in my nova i used the air gap manifold. i contacted edelbrock for any combo suggestions and they told me a spacer on the airgap was a bad idea. they didnt go into to much detail but i took their advise and i was pulling the passenger front wheel off the ground. could save you an inch. or just cut a stock hood open an add an air grabber. that would be cool

cowl hood...
If you leave your air filter set up the way it is , you should go with the cowl so you'll have the extra clearance and so your filter and stuff can get the right amount of air to it.

I have the same problem on my 87 Camaro... My brother in law is a body man and my friend is a glass guy. We're gonna pull the windshield out , sand blast it , then they make this stuff where you put on it , with like a paint brush and then you can paint over it. It's garenteed not to rust for like 30 years or something like that. If you want to know the name of the stuff email me xnotoriousxbillx@aol.com.

grover85: You said that you had the same exact setup as me right down to the spacer? Same carb/intake/spacer/aircleaner?? If your 4 inch did fit, then let me ask you how much clearance did you have between the top of your filter and the hood itself?

I was running an RPM air gap manifold 1 inch open spacer, holley carb, K&N 14 by 5 filter. It rubbed just a little on the back side of the cowl. when I say a little I mean a little.

Sweet, so then I suppose that I could just shorten the air cleaner to a 14x4 and run a 3 inch hood and be fine?

If you have to run a slightly shorter filter you could always go with a K&N flow through top to maintain enough airflow.

A week or so back i was messing around and put my old 3" tall k+n on top of my 4" tall paper filter a total of 7 and maybe a half inches, set my lid back on top adn closed the hood, not sur ehow much clearance i had under the cowl but it did close without touchign the hood. Mines a harwood 4", 305 tbi stock manifold, and no spacer though
