Which cowl induction hoods are open in the back (near the windshield)??
OK, finally decided on what size cowl I need/am getting, and yet another question arises. I am a gauge ***** simply put. Essentially what I want to do is use the lip on the firewall to mount some gauges and have the cowl hood cover them so to speak. However, some companies like Cervini's close off the rear of the cowl and have little vent looking things in them. This pic is of Rage13's Cervini's hood(hope you don't mind that I stole your pic) so you can see what I mean about the vents.
I want the whole part of that hood open(instead of those vents). Does Harwood have one like that or will end up using something from say Unlimited Products up22.com or Glasstek? Thanks for taking the time to read this, and as always opinions or suggestions are welcome.

Sorry, forgot to attach the picture. Like I said before, this is the type of hood I don't want. I would like for the hood I get to be open in the rear. Thanks, Paul Moore
ARRG.... For some reason it won't let me put up a pic on this thread, sorry.

Cool deal, so basically I guess that I'll be looking for either the glasstek or the unlimited products hood. In you guys' opinion, which one do you think had better construction or are they about equal? Thanks, Paul Moore

DO NOT GET AN UNLIMITED PRODUCTS HOOD!!!!!! i got a two and a quarter hood from them and it sucks. one i ordered a FRONT LATCHING hood that would work with my hardware....... left out a tap. couldnt latch it down. had to pin it in the front. which i was trying to avoid in the first place. i called and got my 80 bucks back. the corners were R O U N D not clean cut. the hood was cut too short so there is a half inch gap between by nosepiece and the hood. THERE WERE FREAKIN WAVES IN THE FIBERGLASS that i had to lay 3 coats of bondo on to smooth it out. rough non primered underside. and it took 2.5 months for them to get this "hood" to me. didnt want to sent it back because they were going to charge me shipping.

Cervini's cowl hoods are also open in the back. I like the overall look of the Unlimited Products hood, but I don't really recommend them for show purposes. The underside is unfinished fiberglass and I think the cowl opening is a bit flimsy. Here's a picture of mine: (thanks transferred to Flrtin1 for the info

I have the Un-limited Products hood which is the 2 1/2" cowl that bolts on to the existing hinges and latch. It is open in the back and yes, the under side of the cowl itself is rough fiberglass. I took a piece of aluminum and attached it to the underside to give it a finished look as well as enclose the cowl to pull the air into the carb. I cut out an opening for the air cleaner to sit in the cowl with a K+N filter assembly with their X-Steam top. Works great, and I like the looks of the hood. I have no complaints on my hood.

Unlimited Products hoods suck! I also gotta add my 2 cents on this hood. I have the 2 1/4 cowl hood & mine also took alot of work to get it to sort of fit & look decent. I also agree that the hood seems very flimsy around the open cowl area & it flexed alot while driving on the freeway. So I ended up reinforcing the area with sheet metal & closed up the cowl & added 2 open rectangular holes. The hood doesn't flex as much now.

Yes you are right about the cowl flexing in the middle at the back or opening of the cowl. What I did was to make support out of bolt stock to the length needed. I then epoxied a flat washer to the top and bottom. Before I put it on I put a piece of vacum hose around the threads to cover them and give it a finished look, then I glued it into place back about 1-2 inches. Before glueing that in though, I put a flat piece of plastic that I had laying around onto the top section of the underside so that the support piece I made woud set flat and it also strengthened the area of the hood under the cowl where the hood meets the cowl. You could also use aluminum and glue it in place to give that area strength. What I liked about the hood was the cowl came back at an angle to the winshield if you know what I mean. I don't like the ones that go straight up at the back. I've also seen others that at the front of the hood the front leading edge was a square blunt edged, my hood is tapered like the factory hood. Yes the Unlimited Products hood was not perfect but the overall fit was good, I didn't have to do any shaping or such, I just modified some things to give it more strength and to finish off the raw fiberglass side of the cowl. Overall I was pleased.
