WTF all bolt on cowl hoods are closed off in the rear!!

I called a few places today to get some more info about a hood that I want to get(trying to get a 3 inch cowl hood that is open in the rear). Anyway Harwood's(www.eharwood.com) bolt on 3 inch cowl hood has vent screens in the rear, just like the Cervini's(www.cervinis.com, and none of the Cervini's model hoods are open either). Only way to get t open is if it is a lift off hood. I REFUSE to use hood pins or Dzus fasteners on a street car(It makes it look too much like a drag only car and takes away from the STREET aspect I think). Unlimited Products has a 3.5 inch cowl hood that is open, but they say it will take 3-5 weeks to make, cost $400 plus $150 for shipping(freight collect). Not to mention that a few people on this board say to stay away from them due to their quality issues(hood flexing, no reinforcement, etc.). The last place that I checked was US Body source(www.usbody.com). They also have a 3.5 inch cowl. Just click on the left sidebar for 82-92 camaro and see the picture. The hood by itself cost $649 but I live in FL so I can pick it up and save $$ on the shipping. It just scares me because it says that the scoop and inner liner come closed and that opening is required for clearance. Anybody have this hood? Can you tell me what this means? The way it looks now, I am going to have to find an alternative way to mount my gauges cause I don't think it will be possible to do what I want with them as far as mounting them on the cowl and have the hood cover them. Are there any more comanies out there that make hoods for our cars that I might have missed? Thanks for your time, Paul More

How's the quality on that thing? I've been thinking about driving down and picking one up.

I am happy with the quality of the hood. I ordered the 3.5" bolt on but I would say it is more like 2.5" high.

Why do you want it completely open anyways? I'de much rather have a vent screen, especially on a street car.

Rabbit: Harwood and Cervini's both said that if I were to cut out the material at the rear of the hood, I would weaken the structural integrity of the hood, and it would be more prone to flexing/cracking.
25THRSS: The main reason why I want it open in the rear is so that I can mount gauges on the firewall lip. Gauges like fuel pressure and oil pressure and stuff so that I don't have to worry about any dangerous fluids entering the passenger compartent and highpressure/temperature in the unlikely event that a lne would rupture. Not to mention that with it being open, it will allow more hot air to escpae from under the hood at lower speeds, but will not cause a restriction when the air comes in from the windshield.

Yea my 4" harwood is screened but i'd rather have it that way so nothign makes a home under there. My buddy had called harwood about cutting the back off his i think its a 2.5" on his 89 rs and they said it would be fine so he did it and has had no problems with it yet. I definately agree with you on the hood pins though, personally i just hate the look of em think they look cheap.

Well thanks for all the input on this topic. After some careful consideration, I have decided against mounting the gauges outside under the cowl. First off it a good way to ruin new gauges. Second, with an open hood in the rear, I will get bombarded by many leaves and not to mention what will happen when it rains(I live in FL remember, it rains almost everyday in the summertime). I will just have to find a more creative way to add the gauges I want and keep them in the car. I think that I will be running the Cervini's Ram Air hood. It has the 3 inch lift that I need plus it flows really well with the 92 aero ground effects and high rise spoiler. Thanks, Paul Moore
