the vaccum lines wont be a problem jeff. the cables for the mode doors will be the hard part.

Due to the fact the hot/cold door in the ducting requires minimal effort to move, you could use the brake cable off a Huffy if you wanted (or a cut to fit one).
Braze or solder the cut ends to keep them from fraying.
If you want an OEM cable though, the s-10 trucks (like 90ish... had the HVAC control on the side of the cluster) use a cable about 2' longer than what's in the 3rdgen. It's long enough to reach the console if the operation of the door doesn't have to be reversed from the controls (which is vague in saying but, would be worse if I tried to explain right now)

so are you saying in english basically extend the cable and hoses and it could be done?

i'd like to add a completely different pannel but i'm thinking that might not fit the car so i want to hide the pannel in my center console basically extending it at least 2 feet or more. i do not have air so that isn't a concern but i definately want heat for those fall nights.

keep the ideas and suggestions coming please as i'm going to get started on this next week and want a pretty good idea of what i'm getting into.

In non-drunkenese, yes

I used the vacuum hose coupler from the Lumina I pulled my panel from. I used it (cut 1' extra hose attached to it as well) to extend my hoses and join it to the 4thgen vac. selector.

The hot/cold selector on a 4tgen control works opposite the 3rdgen so, I got the longer cable to pull the flap (door) from the opposite side that the OEM pulls from.
