Paint Strip/ primer application questions
Yah... I know i said i was gonna do sooo much work to my car this winter.. well, i have about 0 room to move around my car right now (and since i parked it) because my father has POS Grand prix sitting there waiting to be fixed (timing went out of the 24V 3.4L engine)... So i haven't done much to it, tho i have bought parts.
I was wondering what the best method for stripping the paint from fiberglass (ground efx, bumpers, harwood cowl) is? Also, would a sandblaster be a good idea for hard to sand places (ie, around hatch lock and behind the taillights, in the hatch crevasse - hatch off -, and little odd places like that) or would i warp the metal? Is there a good medium other than sand that i can use that would make sure i dont warp the metal?
And my question about primer.. Im planning on stripping the body down to bare metal just about everywhere on the car. What would be the best primer for on metal (hehe) bondage? Do i need to use a separate primer between the on metal and the base coats of paint? And do i add body filler before or after the first coat of primer?
I know some of these seem tedious or stupid, but i want to make sure before i - inevitably - screw it up.
Thanx a lot for the help

u should do a search if it working there is a ton of info on this. But real fast. Fot the GFX. A DA with some 120 or 180. Will strip them will take a while but u will not get deep scratchs.I have done the sand blasting thing it works but its a pain in the but to get all the sand out of little places. When u go to paint some allways flys up on your wet paint. That sucks. for the tail light pocks i would not strip the paint( unless its flaking off) Get some red scuff pads and scuff there palces real good.Udo not wanna put filler over paint or primmer. Unless its a glaze u can but to be on the safe side i allways go down to bare metal. For primmer get a good etching primmer spray a coat on all body filler and bare metal. Than go over with reg pimmer block sand than prim again than wet sand. Find a book on body work and paint it will help u out alot.

Search for JEFFW's "project resurrection" thread, A wealth of knowledge. He was in pretty much the same state as you when he started.
Good luck, and don't forget to post with any questiions. Everyone here is always happy to help

For the primer you can use ppg apoxy primer for the bare metal and as a sealer its dp40. When you use it as sealer you just mix it half thinner half primer and its also good cause you can do body work over it. Sand blasting those places you said would be ok.As for stripping fiber glass i have used air craft stripper before and it worked fine i just wouldnt over do it once you get to the fiberglass in that area stop. Now for the bumpers i wouldnt use stripper on the uerithane it will cause it to swell even when i used the special bumper stripper it didnt work well.
