'82-'84 White face gauge overlays DIY

I already did a search but nothing has come up for these specific years. I was thinking about putting in white gauge face overlays in but wanted to do them myself because I'm cheap. I've run into some problems though. I have a spare cluster I took apart and the guages actually have the numbers and stuff painted on. There isn't an overlay like newer cars. Also, the face is indented almost like a dish, therefore they cannot come in contact with the scanner. At this point the only thing I could think of is to actually cut out the gauge so it will lay flat on the scanner. I also want to keep the 85MPH speedo. I am just wondering if anyone has done this to their '82-'84 Firebirds. What years had an overlay you could take out and scan, if any. Was '84 the last year of the 85MPH speedometer? What would you suggest, I will only buy them as a last resort.

c'mon 21 views and no replies?? I know there are countless "gauge" threads, but I haven't seen anyone address the '82-'84 gauges. Isn't there anyone that can help me out?

I too have been on the look-out for 82-84 scans. The best I've found so far has been courtesy of speedingpenguin. The Speedometer and Tach aren't correct for the 82-84 guages, but the rest of the guages are. Here's the link:

Thanks for the link eagle_eyes, but I'd prefer to try and do this myself, and save some money. Looking at the stock gauge I'm trying to figure out how to cut around it. Also, 82Firebird...those scans are not correct even for our cars (82-84) Unless you want to do some photoshoping. The scans have "oil" and "Temp" on the same cluster. However on my '82 "Volts" and "Temp" are on the same cluster. The other one on mine has "Fuel" and "Temp" together, not "Fuel" and "Volts" like the scan. Not to mention the numbers are wrong also. Oil pressure goes up to 80 on mine and it also have more numbers for the volts. Another thing I noticed is that since the stock gauges have no screws, the new overlays would somehow have to be taped on.

My bad. I guess since my car has never been on the road- I havent payed that close of attention to which guages are in the same clusters.

I didn't know either until I was looking at the cluster I had sitting next to my computer...I was getting ready to print out the scans you linked and I was looking at the gauges and saw they were a little different.

don't give up hope, even though I have. The quest must go on. I have been looking for some for my 82 also.

I will check around to see if I can find them.
