Good things on Megashifter
hey,
I just read the post below mine, and it seems like every one doesn't like the megashifter
but the only thing is that i just bought it, and it came in yesterday. so i am stuck w/ putting in. but the only thing is that they didn't get the consel model. any one did buy it and happy w/ install? i don't mind hacking up the consel plate, that seems to be the big problem and the t-handle coming off.
that was the est. on install also?
THANKS!

The installation is pretty straight forward.
As long as it's a new or good used megashifter you should like it. I got my 2nd hand and the first owner didn't take care of it at all... infact it would barely shift through the gears until I oiled and greased it up then worked it for 20 minutes or so.
Just make sure you loctite the handle on... that's what leads to the stripped threads and handles flying off. Mine was also stripped when I got it. I think there is a nut too so you can set the handle at the angle you like.
Also keep armorall spray away from the boot. People sometimes make the mistake of cleaning it with armorall and it eats away at the rubber. Which you can buy replacements for but there pricey.
Overall it's a good shifter upgrade from the OEM one. Did you get the console model? If not I might still have my console model installation parts around somewhere in a parts pile.
I've been fairly happy with mine. But like everything else I want to try something different eventually.
One of the best things about the design is it will work with a variety of transmissions since you can use a simple set pin to block off the gear selection on the 4th gear. So you'll have a wide ability of reuse if you decide to use another transmission, install in different vehicle, or resell it.

I love my Megashifter. People who don't know anything about cars always seem to think its a stick, which is kinda cool. It wasn't too bad on the install, it was my first mod and I didn't really have too much trouble (I didn't buy the console one). I used the stock shifter cable just to make the install a little easier, and I had to cut the stopper that holds the cable in place on the shifter so it would fit. After I got it to fit, I used wire and twisted it in place really tight to make sure it wouldn't go anywhere. No problems so far.
I'm tearing out the engine from my car starting today, and doing some work to my center console and replacing my door panels, so lots of parts of my car are gonna be all opened up. If you want pictures of my install, I'd be happy to take some.

ps. sorry for the spelling. and i am doing this whole install in the pouring rain..
so its a pain to go back and fourth under the car to adjuest the damn cable.

I hooked up my neutral safety switches. So I don't really know for sure about that.
Probably should hook up all the switches anyways. Cause if I remember right ones the reverse light switch.

I didn't hook up the relay suggested from radio shack. The one to change the idle in park and neutral. I think I might have eventually hook'd that up too. Be sure to share pics of your hard work!

I may be wrong, but I believe the relay is for the current running through the neutral safety switch and the reverse lights. I never used a relay and it works just fine for me.
I'll take pictures with the console off tomorrow or Friday if I don't get to it today.

I also love my Megashifter; I never had a problem installing it, and I did wire up the Radio Shack relay as the instructions suggest. Don't put armor-all on the rubber boot tho; it'll put a million cracks in the rubber. A new one cost me $12 from Summit Racing.
Tip: Sort all the parts out by which step in the instructions they're for. I put mine in sandwich bags. That way when I came to, say, step 10, and it wanted a small E-clip, I just grabbed the bag marked "10".
It also seems that a lot of people have trouble adjusting the shift cable. If you follow the directions you'll have no trouble. It just involves a lot of getting into the car and getting out of the car and getting under the car and getting back into the car- so I think a lot of people rush thru it.
