Heater Box Removal
Anybody know how the heater box is attached to the firewall?
Need to repair some rust and it would be easier to do without that darn thing in the way.
Can it be removed without taking off the A/C box?
Thanks

i just did mine, i took the dash off 1st, then removed the heater core and hoses... next i removed the blower motor and stuff... after that, i removed all the a/c stuff from the engine.... there are two screws that hold the inner box in place... once you get those out frm the engine side it should fall right off... hope this helps, not good at explaining stuff in detail... peace

That's the info I was looking for thanks.
Unfortunately I ripped the darn thing out on Saturday, and found those 2 screws through the firewall.

Got a question to you guys who just removed your dash to remove the heater box. I am in Australia and the damned steering wheel and other items are in the way for me to remove my heater core for replacement. I have worked hours on what you guys in the US would only spend a little bit of time on. I think I am best to remove the dash so that I can get to it properly. Someone when they did the conversion also cut a section of the heater box and did a botchy repair. I want to start over an do it properly. So could someone tell me how the dash comes off. The books just arent that clear. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Heater Box Removal
I’m in the process of removing the complete AC system and replacing it with a non-AC heater box. Do the two screws that attach from inside the dash, do they hold any thing besides the heater box, like something inside there? With this I'm wondering if the two screws can be safely drilled out, then replaced from the outside with a matching metal screw that would hold in place (diameter and length to be determined)? I use my car as a daily driver, and the down time would be allot to dissemble the whole dash along with the AC system combined. Thanks, Ed.

Thanks for the info Will - That procedure doesn't sound as horrible as I perceived it to be. Cocacolakidd

heater core replacement
I replaced a heater core on an 87 Z28, but i think i cheated. I just took off the top dash pad, unbolted the steering colunm and let it lay on the drivers seat. Then i pulled the whole dash forward and squeezed myself around the back side, got into the heater box and pulled out the leaking heater core that was fogging up my windows. It took a total of 2 hours instead of 6 or something like the service book called for.

Aluminum heater box
Hey! Has every one heard of the TIG welded Aluminum non AC Heater Box that "88IROC " has made. There are pics of it he posted on the site here ( https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/att...postid=2323665 ). I think he has only the one now, but said he may make more. Wow would they look great if they were polished.

I am in Australia and since the car is now right-hand drive I am having a hell of a time with my heater box. Some one before me had cut off the right hand corner of the cover because I assume that they had had problems with the door just behind that. Anyway, I have only just now got the old pieces of the front cover off. Is there anything that I should do as far as re-insulating the doors behind the front cover? Also, a real biggie, how do you remove or move the shroud in front of the core. I cant seem to get the heater core in place because of that shroud. It looks as if you need a straight shot at the holes to make the core nozzles go thru the firewall. Any help from you guys would be appreciated. Thanks.
