No Keys. Need To Open Rear Hatch

On a 87 Firebird, How can I get rear hatch open without keys and without power? Some kid wants the spoiler off my parts car. Can the spoiler be removed from inside the car? I may let him pull it if he don't mind laying in the rat turds..Thanks.

Not an easy thing to do the way you would like to.. Does the car have a power hatch release?? If so, just get it some power to it and as long as it works, your good to go.....

The dash is out of it, so no power.. I'd have to splice into the elec. hatch release someplace toward the rear of the car if it could just be shorted to make it release. I hear it's possible to have a key made from VIN# at dealer, is that true? I was hoping for another way tho if possible.

EDIT: I pulled the drivers side interior quarter panel trim, there's a small wiring harness coming out from under the door sill going to the back of the car. Is this the hatch release power wires?

Yes you can get a key cut by the VIN, but some shops want to see that you are infact the owner of the car. You should be able to give power right to the hatch release switch to get it open mind you.

Crawl back into the hatch area. Remove the hatch light. You should see a 10mm screw. Remove it and the manual or solenoid hatch release will come free. Behind it is a large square hole (see the image I've attached). Inside that hole is the tang that the manual or solenoid release actuates. Pry it counter-clockwise with a long screwdriver and the latch will release.

i have a more effective way to do it. take a long flat bladed screwdriver and a medium sized hammer. place the screwdriver on the lock where the key would be and hit it with the hammer, it will punch the lock mechanism into the car and the hatch will open. if not you can sometimes turn the screwdriver once it is lodged into the cylinder and open the hatch this way.

I'll give Lon's advice a shot, I don't want to destroy the lock just yet...Not until I get all the interior out of the car. Trying to keep it weather tight till then. Too many of these cars are disappearing so I'd like to salvage as much as possible.
BUT, Like Jesse James said before he destroyed a 70 big block El Camino into a figure 8 racer.."I'm making the rest of the El Camino's more valuable because now there's one less and they're even more rare."

Thanks for all the speedy replies folks.

I agree with the removing light procedure. I did it in a JY once...but....do not do it in the sun or without something covering the glass! That glass will reflect/intensify the suns rays........ and it will burn you real good! Really really nasty sun burn......
