changing gauge lights
Just wondering if it's possible to change the orange color behind my gauges in my Firebird to blue or red LED's? I know my Grand Am you can't change just the bulb you need reverse overlays...so I was wondering if it's the same for the Bird. I read a few posts from some people who already changed their's, but no one mentioned if it's just a straight swap or not.
If anyone knows, fill me in!

Caps lock on forums or email = YELLING!!! Please stop yelling at me... my eyes hurt.
To change the color of the Firebird/TA gauges, you will need new gauge faces. The color is contained within the color silk screening on the back side of the gauge and could technically be scraped off, but you'd most likely ruin the gauges instead of making them useable for another color bulb. Search for "printing overlays" and the like within this forum. Some good info on doing things like custom gauges/etc.

no problem, thanks for the info.
why do these pontiacs have to be so complicated???
tell me this, cos im a little confused, how is just printing new overlays for my gauge faces gonna help me change the backlight color? won't that just change the background, and not the illumination..or whatever!

just to let you guys know...i changed the bulbs behind my gauges and they were clear bulbs with an orange rubber on top.
i swapped them with red bulbs, and wallah....they're glowing red.
so it is a straight swap.

they weren't LED's...just a regular red 194 colored bulb. i only had 6 bulbs, but i had 3 or 4 bulbs that jcurrie gave me that had been painted red, they worked too, but you can see in my gauges (when i post a pic) they aren't as powerful as the red.
on the back there is 15 bulbs, but we only changed 9 i think. we didnt change the shift light and things like that.
and another thing, if u just wanted them to glow regular bulbs, just take the orange rubber thing off them, and that should work too.
the needles when i had the gauges out of the car were orange, but i was told they are clear, they aren't. When i changed the bulbs, the glow from the red has made the needles red too.
if you change yours too, let me know how you get along. cos everyone says you have to buy overlays, so i found it strange it was so easy. im wondering if anyone else has luck like i did!
