Camaro Center console carpeting

Was wondering how hard it is to remove the carpeting from a center console? My lower console is cracked where the radio mounting holes are and i have been unable to locate a tan lower console.I can get a plain black non carpeted console and wanted to try to use my own tan console carpet. Is this an easy thing and is there an easy way to removethe old carpet. Also what type of adhesive is used to hold it on

Re: Camaro Center console carpeting

I asked my upholstery shop this very same question; I'm restoring my '89 and I have a new center console. The upholstery guys said to forget about trying to remove the old carpet and that the right way to do it is to get a carpet kit. Maybe they were just trying to make a few bucks, but I trust them. The carpet kit for my interior (Medium Gray, and this kit just covers the interior plastic panels) is $300.

You could also likely paint the black console tan by grabbing some Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric spraypaint; I'm having to do this with some of my interior pieces because they're paint-to-match.

the carpet pulls up ... its not hard to remove... i removed mine in one hour, there are a couple of glue patches but not near the console...... i would never lay new carpet over old carpet.... put sound material under the new carpet but dont keep the old carpet ( may stink or mildew later..)

If you read his question, he is asking about removing the carpet from the sides of the console.

I pulled the blue carpet off the sides of my center console- perfect textured black underneath with just a few spots of sticky glue- came off with 3M adhesive remover- looks great. If the old tan carpet is in good shape, just glue it on- 3M must make an adhesive just for that application??

Does anyone have the console installed with the carpet removed? How does it look?
