Hey im about to install my new black carpet and am looking for some tips.. Do i really need that padding under the carpet??

Do i just lay the carpet down or is there some kind of glue/type stuff to hold it in place?

 

If it helps any, I swapped my carpet from grey to red...I used the padding, and I didn't use any kind of glue or adhesive although the original grey carpet WAS stuck to the body. Anyway, the new red one looks just as nice and fits very well, no glue required. The padding just seems like a good idea, im not sure of its technical purpose.

 

i THINK its there to damper some of the noise from the car (who wants it if it does that ) lol

 

I just installed probably the same ACC black carpet you are right now. It fit kinda funny but it was good overall. I had to do alot of work stuffing padding to push the carpet out around areas such as the console, door plates, etc which was a hassle. The aftermarket carpet is nothing compared to the original in my opinion. I went and took some duct insultation and cut/glues them to the undersize of the carpet in areas such as the passengers feet where its no padding for some reason.

 

Hey so did you use the cars stock padding or did you use any or did you buy some? Im debating useing any at all besides for the little bit that came attached to the new carpet. Did you just lay your carpet down or did you use some type of glue?

 

I personally used the padding already attached to the carpet. No glue...fit perfectly.

 

Hey what did you guys use around the edges by your door? Is the carpet suppose to snug into something to hold it there?

 

Yeah, it tucks nicely under that piece that you see when you first open your door. I've never known the name of it...it runs the length of the door, i've always called it the Threshold. If you need any pics, let me know.

Here - hopefully this is what you're talking about. The plastic trim piece that runs the length of the door hides the ends of the carpet.

 

OOOOOOOOOOOO yeah i forgot about that piece!!! Now then, where did i put it? lol

 

Which brand did use use for the carpet? I'm thinking about changing mine..... (again)

 

I actually didn't use aftermarket. I found an 88 rs with some really nice carpeting - so it fit like a charm. I would recommend looking for that before you go aftermarket.

 

Hey, i got some ACC from jcwhitney. Im trying to cut it and lay it myself, but since its like 95 out there, its hard to do in the heat lol

 

so, did you guys strip everything out of the interior to put the carpet in? I would LOVE to get new carpet...but I have so many electrical/digital gauges hooked through the console...I would hate to take the console out...oh yeah..and the roll bar too..

 

hehehe... i just got my carpet in last week.. you want to KEEP the padding in there as much as possible. it will keep the road noise down alot and it will sound better when you have your stereo installed, also it keeps your car warm in the winter and cool in the summer. think of it as your house installation Why not right? just takes 5min extra.

-I personaly rubberized sprayed my floor and then covered the whole bottom w/ 3 layers of "fake Dynomat" then added extra padding from home depot (or anyother home imporment store).

My cars sound should be nice and cozy inside and loud when i floor it.

Center console needs to come out...the dash and upper console can stay where they are. All plastic trims comes up, seats obviously, and that'll pretty much do it.

 

BEst to do it on a hot day where you can let the carpet set out in the sun for a few hours while ya pull the seats out. Its makes it MUCH more workable.

 

Takes me about fifteen minutes to get the seats out... heh

 

What do you mean by upper console can stay?

 

i'm guessing he's talking about the console that goes between the lower center console and the dashboard... where your stereo and AC controls sit...

 

HMM thats what i thought, but Camaros have the AC/stereo and lower console connected as one unit

 

I'm sorry...absolute wrong choice of wording. I mean to say that the dash - not the dash pad but the entire dash - can stay in its place, because your carpet isn't effected by it. Sorry about that.

 

Rubberized spray i mean "Undercoating" it is the stuff under your car and in your fenders.. the black tar looking stuff.The spray you can get in a rattle can and it has not smell.

 

What is Dynomat and why use "fake" instead of the real thing.

 

dynomat is a sound deadener it stops vibrations in the metal basically. Also I don't know what kind he used but there are alot of other choices out there that don't come with the hefty price tag of dynomat. I think that's why he said "fake dynomat"

 

for those of you who did buy new carpeting, did you go with ACC? How was the quality?

 

I put in a new carpet a few months ago from Year One, I believe ACC manufactured it. The carpet was great. It was molded fairly well at the beginning and flattened out over time. You might have to cut some of it for the console, but it's no big deal. Overall, I was happy with it.

Oh and make sure you unplug your interior lights. I had a dead battery when I finished the carpet.
