91 TA Fog Lights

I have a 91 Trans Am that I just bought off this board. When I got it the left and right fog lights were not working. Here is what I have done to get them to work:

1. Replaced bulb on drivers side light
2. Took both lights out and scraped the contacts (for the ground wire) and replaced the female end of the ground wire with a new tip.

I put them back together and both work now, ecept the passenger side light burns brighter than the drivers side. I took it out and scaraped it again thinking it was form a bad ground, and still no improvements. The bulbs are the same as far as wattage and such. And the positive wires for both are recieving the same voltage.

Any ideas as to how I can get both to burn the same brightness? I was thinking of just getting new gfog ligth assemblies or new pig tails for them or both.

What you guys think I should do? Has anyone else had this problem before?

Thanks,
Scott

I had a similar problem with my 91 GTA.
I tried replacing many of the same parts that you did, but my problem is that bulbs would always eventually loose power, and then one of the bulbs would be dark, with the other lit.

I evenutally gave up and rewired the fog lights. They are now connected directly to the battery, and bypass the stock power wires. I have the power connected to a small toggle switch located inside my center console. I would have liked to use the stock fog lamp switch above the HVAC controls, but my stock fog light wiring was really messed up.

Perhaps your wiring is gone just like mine was, and instead of tryng to make it work you can just by-pass it all together.
The only problem is that the fog lights now wont turn on automatically when the headlights come on. Instead, I have to lift the center console door and turn on the switch. Also, you need to remember to turn them off or they will drain your battery with engine stopped. This is normally not a problem for me as I only run the fog lights at night so it is fairly obvious if you leave them on.

The one benefit is you can have the fog lights on without any other lights on, which looks kinda cool.

Thank you for the reply, I left that option out, but I was thinking same thing, that I may need to rewire them all together, but if I do that I wil wire them to an open ACC slot on my fuse box, so that when I turn the car off they go off.....just in case I forget to turn them off........lol

Trying to find a way to not rewire them at this point though. Any other ideas to keep it factory?

Why not just run new wires to the stock switch? Connect the stock dash switch to a relay that gets power directly off the battery. At the same time you could do the headlights.

why not just use a relay to give both of them battery power and you can use one of the power wires going to the foglights now as a trigger wire.

Agreed, it's the more logical route.

Not to be a smart a$$ are both bulbs the same watt. They sell the bulbs in 100w and 40w I almost messed up buying replacements. In all places the 40w is legal but the 100 are not, just a thought. if you want to rewire First you go buy a relay that switches off when power is applied by another source "high beams" Some one may be able to help with what relay is needed. Then you run power from accesory swiched tab in your fuse block to switch in car a fuse helps and makes safe so tie one in then from factory switch run power to relay tab "power in" then from next relay tab power out run to fog lights. The relay should have 4 tabs if I remember right on is power in, one is power out ,one is ground and other is the swiching tab this is connected to the power wire on the high beams so when you use high's fogs shut down. Since your pulling accesory power swiched the fogs will not be on when car is not running. Hope this helps Maybe vader or someone can give more details on the relay.

Yes that helps and thank you al for the posts. Yes the watts are the same on the bulbs....lol....first thing I checked. I guess i will rewire it with relays as suggested, but I do need help with the correct relay, and as for my high beams, ...they do not work. Just foudn that out other night. I pull the lever in the car back, and nothing happens....it doesnt even click, so I guess I have to replace that as well. Minor things to fix considering I only paid $2k for this car and the drivetrain is perfect..........lol

If it's not even clicking, start off with the switch/stalk. Flip the steering wheel all the way up and try it.

your highbeam issue could be something as simple as the rod being slightly bent. take the cover off the bottom of the dash and look under while you move the highbeam lever, you should be able to see the rod moving. I have seen a couple brackets bend on some different cars so you can try slightly bending the bracket back straight and it might take care of your problem.

Cool thanks, I will try that tomorrow and see if the rod is bent. The way my luck has been going witht his car, it is probably something simple as that. When I first got the car, the hood wouldn't pop, Headlights didn't work, fog lights didn't work and AC didn't work....headers had a blown gasket. I have spent less than $100 and fixed everything thus far, I hope it continues to be this easy.........lol

hood= Readjusted the bracket and greased it- Fixed
headlights= lose conenction- Fixed
Fog Lights= bad ground (other than one shining brighter)- Fixed
A/C= bought a kit for $30 and retro fitted to 134a- Fixed
Exhaust= replaced header gasket- Fixed

Bright lights not working, I will get back to you on that tomorrow.......lol
