depending on what style of paintjob you're wanting, and how intricate it is, along with how good of shape (poor of shape) the car is in, a good, show quality paint job can easily cost 4k. Can also exceed it, and can sometimes come under it to. Show quality, depends on how well you're going to place in the show. For a show winner that'll turn up on magazine pages (the big ones, not smaller mags) odds are, it's a frame off, or ground up resto or redo. And everything from the subframe being powdercoated, to the unibody being painted gloss, no bolt will be put in if it's not SS, cross drilled, and new rotors, with beautiful six piston baer calipers, all leater and custom stitched, etc. That guy, will probably spend more than 4k on a job. If you wanna win your local show, you can probably do it for 1200 bux.
The reason I ask is I am currently in the process of buying a beautiful '91 Z28, but I know about the infamous water-based paint problems, so a repaint is in my future. The car is mint and I wouldn't be looking to put anything fancy or nationally recognizable, just a beautiful, no flaw black paint job that would stand up to a high level of scrutiny.
Edit: This isn't anything I will be able to afford at all any time soon, just need to get an idea to start saving for it. Like I said, the paint is fine now, but obviously those ****-poor '87 and up jobs won't last forever AND have chip issues. Screw California's water-based paint crap that it pushed onto the Van Nuys plant.

I say look at their turn outs....and ask how much a paint job like those costs......and don't let them give you the whole "your car is too old and I wouldn't spend money on it...try one of our lower grade deal" things

My buddy got his truck painted black with huge cherry red gothic flames on his S-10 show truck for about 4 months and $5000.
5 years ago brother got a macco paint job for under $1000 on an old police caprice, wasn't so bad of a job, the paint is still on it (bright white). The only bad job was the minimal bond work that had to be done.

Thanks Jason, I was going to keep you updated on things I do with the car anyway.
Hopefully I have the $$ by this winter because I will have her in storage and it won't matter if it takes them 3 or 4 months.

For a show winning paint job, $8-10k or more. For one that won't get you embarrassed at a show, $4-6k. For a nice driver, $2k.
The difference is a little bit of materials costs and a whole ton of labor costs.

How much less without flames? Like I said, I am just getting an idea here about how much to save up. Buying this car is putting a serious ****ing hurting on my wallet. My hope is to have enough by winter, since I live in NY now my car will have to be stored anyway so might as well get something out of it.

I know a guy around here that does a good quality paint job, for only a grand. He stripped my friends Supra bare, prepped, painted, and clear for only 1k. We wet sanded it, and buffed it, it looks real clean, not to flashy but def. looks better than factory paint.

If your saving up for a top of the line paint job, check into akzo nobel (sikkens) paint at some of your local body shops or paint stores. sikkens is a german based paint that lays down almost a slick as glass and is probably the best all around paint you will find for a show quality paint job. It does cost quite a bit more than you average ppg or dupont but it is well worth it.

I filled, sanded and primed the patchwork myself. Had the car painted candy blue ($750 for paint) and the labor to spray was only a few hundred. I got a show-stopper paint job for about a grand becuase I got the paint myself, did my own body work, etc.
click the link for my car domain page in my sig. the blue camaro is the car i'm talking about.
PS- candy colors dont show in pictures, you have to see it first hand to admire the color. regardless, it is a great paint job.

i get all my paint from hok in california but there are other sources. i just prefer hok.... i like the system and know it in my head for the most part... not all of it but i can get around without a book in hand so thats a plus....
i wish i had a nice garage for winter work but i don;t so all my work must be done before fall gets too cold. if you can get it to mass we can work something out.
