Some people have told me that for a newbie, trying to paint the car a metalic color is gonna be a LOT more tricky than just a regular color, is this particularly true? Not looking to paint a show car, just need to get the car looking finished so I can sell it. Right now its flame red metalic (err...was), would something like Viper red look really awful with the flame red metalic engine bay? Thanks,

no its not that hard, just spray the car together not in peices. and do not spay to heavy or you will get whats called molting. this is when the flakes don't lay proper. don;t go for instant coverage when you start spraying build up you base using light coats. when you try heavy coats you will get into trouble with molting. and change your pattern of spray will help prevent stripping. so go side to side on the body in one pass the go up and down on the body next time.
you can spray metalic no problem. mix up a little and do a practice panel. see what happens if you get to close and to wet with the paint it will give you the knowledge of what to look for when spraying.

Looks like Jeff has named most of the problems to watch for. Personally I wouldnt do a metallic on a first paint job. My first was white and it still had a few problems(fish eyes, use dessicant filters along with your water seperator). Looked good though. My first metallic job I ended up with tiger stripes on the roof. Looked like ***. Figured out how to fix that problem and did another metallic rig a few years later. This time I screwd up and painted my rig in pieces. Which isnt that bad, as long as you lay all the pieces in the same positions as they go on the vehicle. IE vertical pieces and horizontal pieces. I painted the doors with them laying down. The metal flake sank and the color rose to the surface. Now my doors are darker then the rest of the truck. Did my tailgate 2 years later and it matches perfectly. My 3d metallic paint job was my formula. Navy blue dark metallic pearl. Turned out excellent. But its also about my 10th paint job. I've gotten used to my gun settings and figured out most of the problems the hard way. Painting takes practice.

I've also noticed...when spraying high metalic colors...make sure to wetsand with 1000 git sandpaper instead of using the scuff pads/sand fix. I work at a dealership body shop and we use scuff pads/sand fix to prep everything...when we scuffed anything that was metallic...painted it..then cleared it...you could see light scratches all through the metallic. So, we started wetsanding with 1000 and it looked fine. Just a little info for ya
