airbag retrofit?

I have a problem. I'm 16 and i've been saving up for a 3rd generation Camaro because of their status as the last of the affordable muscle cars, preferably an 1985-1987 IROC with a 305 and a manual. I finally convinced my parents to let me buy one, however, a fatal blow was struck to my plan today. My parents said unless the car has an airbag, I can't buy one. I believe airbags were not availible until 1990 and the IROC was discontinued in '89. I would really rather have an IROC, so if anyone has any knowlege of installing an airbag steeringwheel, possibly from a later 3rd gen, 4th gen or other GM vehicle into an earlier IROC, it would be of great help. Thanks

im sure you can install a steering wheel with an airbag but not sure if you can connect the airbag with it. Whats the point of having an airbag if it doesnt work though right?. Just tell your parents you have seat belts and they do enough . BTW get a 5.7 iroc or z28 forget about a 5.0 . But then again i just have a v6 so im talking shhh

It's time to do some more reading. There were '90 model year IROCs. The IROC name was taken from the IROC racing series and in 1990 Chevy lost the "contract" to have thier cars as the IROC cars. Dodge won the contract with thier superbly awsome Daytona . The "contract" on the IROC name ended December 31st of 1989. If you check into it, most car manufacturers start producing the next model year in or around August of the year before the "production year". That's nearly 4 months of cars built as IROCs under the Camaro name. It's not a HUGE number of cars, but they are out there.

Now on to a better question..... Why not just go with the '91-'92? The IROC package was really nothing more than an appearance package (aka stickers and stripes) on a nicely equiped Z28. Besides, the 91-92 cars have nicer dashes and better ground effects and rear spoilers. That would satisfy your parents needs for WORKING airbags and you would have a nice car......Mines for sale

Thanks for the help. Sure is a shame Chevy lost the IROC contract to the Daytona. Imagine if they hadn't and there was a 4th generation IROC... maybe GM would still produce a car with the camaro nameplate? maybe the IROC series would still garner some respect? Oh well, just a thought.

I agree with getting a 91/92. They look infinitely better. Aggressive ground effects do wonders for a car. I'm personally one of the few that don't like air bags, but your parents seemed to have made up their mind.

the air bags in these cars arent the best air bags out there. they are gen 1 air bags and will prolly do more damage to you than save you. that is pprovided you can find one that even works. ive go thru two where the air bag didnt go off. anyway good luck with the search.
