Need advice on 1/4 panel repair/replacement

My 91Z has a bit on cancer on the rear 1/4. However, its only on that 1" wide lip that folds into the wheel well.

What have you guys done to fix this? I was contemplating welding a small piece of sheet metal in and skim coating it over, then painting.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

you have the right idea.

Do a search on TomP, and 1/4 panel replacement. I think his thread(s) were way back in like 2001, but they were hugely extensive. He replaced most of his rear 1/4 panels, and learned along the way, so good info there.
