Did you just try one dealership? Give another one a call and see what they come up with. I had no issues at all when I took mine in. I called and they looked it up and showed it had not been done. Got it in and fixed and back to me in a week. In fact one of the guys there said "hadn't seen one of those recalls in 15 years. " I don't think that lady at the NHTSA knows what she is talking about either. I think that since this is a "saftey" issue, it is for the life of the car, not this 10 year window she mentinoed. Hopefully you'll find a dealership that will get your fixed for you under the recall.

1992 CHEVROLET FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
Go To: www.nhtsa.gov.......once on the home page, click the link for "Recalls From Office of Defects Investigation". That should take you to the ODI Search page. Once you're there, do a TYPE seach for the vehicle of choice. In this case, 1992 CHEVROLET CAMARO. Then select the TANK ASSEMBLY/FILLER PIPE as the component and click "Retrieve Recalls" button. Then click on the Document Seach button and you will be able to download/open a .PDF (Adobe) file with lots of information about the vehicles included, the test the dealer is supposed to do, and what parts are to be replaced if a defect is found. Can't hurt to be armed with information the next time you approach the dealer.

I was reading the paper work on the recall and it states that the vehicles in quest is 1991 to 1992 camaros and firebirds built in van Nuys. Or the other way of knowing is your vin has the the letter "L" as the eleventh number

Here is the shortcut for the letter:
http://199.79.180.163/prepos/files/A...-94V077-NN.PDF

It also clearly states that the dealership can not charge you or exlcude you because of:

Ownership - No matter how many people the car was sold to.
Mileage - Mileage is not the issue at hand...
Age - They must comply regardless of age of vehicle

Also they must provide you with a loaner car during the repair at no extra cost. And if the repair is not made within a timely manner. They must give you another car of equal value.....

I hope this helps...

Update so far...

I called the dealer and they said their is no such recall...Or in their word " Maybe general Motors has not aknowledged the recall"

Sound like a load of crock...

So I called General Motors Corp. I argued with the guys over there and what they are doing is a case in regards to this matter.

I told them that I know a number of people with the same problem.
Then I told them...You guys should take this into consideration since all these people including myself have all this documentation regarding this matter and all GM is giving everyone the runaround. If anything happens to these people while driving..Question is, Is GM going to wait to be sued before they really decide to look into it.
Then I told them if I do not get the response by the end of the week..I told him that I think I should forward ALL the information that I have to my Lawyer and see what he says.....

He said that he is going to call me tomorrow in regards to this matter...

I will keep you posted...

took my car in today, and once again no recalls at all. usually they look deeper into it but this time they just said there was no open recalls.

dont know what to do about it now.

.... just called GM and they said to have the car inspected and if it shows the same problems that the recall was suppose to fix then they could help with the cost of repair.

but still showed no recalls on the car.

Just had the car inspected and this is the result on my paperwork

Check for gas tank leak.
Advise
Found Fuel Tank Leaking At The Filler Neck, Needs Tank Asembly

and my car is not included in the recall, so obviously they missed some of the band tanks out there.

So if your having the same problem as me and its not on recall, call GM and tell them and they should advise you to have it checked and let them know, they will take some of the fee's. I dont know what their going to cover yet but i was told a gas tank is 300 bucks. about to call and find out what their going to cover, and see if i can get them to cover it all.

Might also add..

91/92 Camaros/Firebirds built from 10/89 to 08/92
91 VIN's (last 8 digits) from ML100001 through ML200843
92 VIN's (last 8 digits) from NL100001 through NL170008

*All affected vehicles will be inspected and corrected

Each vehicle corrected under this campaign should have had a GM "Campaign Identification Label" affixed to the radiator core support. The label identifies the campaign by number and includes a five (5) digit code to identify the dealer providing the service.

We have two cars that reaked of gas. The 88 vert, and the 89 iroc. We just dropped the tanks and patched the filler neck. So far it has worked on both, but the vert has been sitting for 2+ years. I didnt do the patching, my dad did. I can ask him what he used.

some of you guys are missing a valuable point... yes it's a safety issue, but damn, it's a 16 year old car or older in some cases. my bird is 25 years old this year. if the gas tank leaks, I'm buying a new one. period! i don't expect GM to replace a gas tank that's 25 years old. it's just unreasonable. but good luck finding your answers, i hope you all find what you're looking for.

Noticed 4 different safety recalls for my 91 rs

1. Windshield seal recall
2. safety belt recall
3. fuel tank
4. recliner screws are too long.

Should i print these out and bring them to the dealer. Im going to go to John Hall chevrolet in Daytona Beach, FL tomarrow. They are a big dealer and should fix it for me. I talked to Tom Gibbs Chevrolet and they said they all expired. I was pissed. my friends told me to go to john hall. Did you guys bring the paperwork? Recall numbers? How did you approach them. The first dealer acted like he couldn't even look up my vin. like my car was TOO OLD he said. Im sorry that you can't keep a car nice but i can. ITS CALLED MAINTANCE. and i hung up.

ive got 3 camaros that are at least 16 years old and only one, the nicest of them all, has a smelly, leaky gas tank,

and thats because it was a mess-up from GM, or else it would be fine like the other 91 i have or my 88. things last when their built right. thats why they should replace the tanks.

i didnt get anywhere with gm or my dealership, so i have my neighbor the general manager of the dealership wonking on it for me, hopefully i can atleast get a discount. they cheapest tank they have is 400 plus labor.

lol... i just bough 3 91 rs parts cars. they are parts cars but they run and drive, i'm taking them to get my new $400 gas tank, pulling the tanks and scrapping the cars.

if you have a nice enough thirdgen that you would consider a recall such as this i can't believe you would trust it in the hands of a dealership.

good luck with it though.. good info at least as it's always good to know things that are for sure broken from gm. it happens.

Strange. Safety recalls never expire, they are not allowed to. My car is still eligible for a new gas tank. I am gonna get it done soon.

some people were saying that the recall expires in 10 years from when the first owner buys the car. Since the recall was posted in may of 1994, its well over 10 years, almost 13 years. And do i just print out the recall paper from online and show it to the dealer?

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

I found the original paperwork on the net that all chevy dealers had recieved about this recall and it gives them detailed instructions on how this recall should be delt with. It clearly says that it does not matter the age milage or ownership of th car,it is covered from this day forward. It tells you what is owed to the customer, all the vin numbers that were recalled and even says that gm owes you a new car if yours is not fixed in a certain time period. I myself own a 91 RS which vin is one of those recalled. I just bought the car and never even put a full tank of gas in it yet, but as soon as I get it out I'll fill it up to see if it leaks and if it does I'm going to the dealership prepared with all 36 pages of the original documents so I don't get the run around.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

I know it is kind of a moot point now but a couple of years ago I kept smelling gas by my back wheel on the driver side. I was having some work done at the dealer and they called. not only where there holes in this thing the entire neck pulled out of the gas tank!!!! it took me about a day to find a shop that would weld it and then they would not take it unless it was completely dry and didn't reak of gas. that took another day of washing this thing out and using a fan to dry it over and over again.

the short of it is that it is fixed now but the dealer never said a word about any recalls. on the birght side my car didn't catch fire. things can always be worse.

I think my car has already been fixed, because it holds a good deal of pressure in the tank. Every time I open the gas cap it lets out a lot of gas, like a bottle of soda.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

Update. I spoke to my cuz who works for "GM", he said that their was a recall but there is also a time limit for this recall, i believe it was upto 10 yrs from the original court presentation. Since it was presented as a recall in 1992 (Towards the end) its not a valid recall anymore... So they send a memo to all the dealers to remove it from there systems...

Sorry ...................

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

I am new here so I just saw this. I have a problem where my gas tank often leaks if it is full. So I looked into this recall and after gathering some info I called my local chevy dealership. Told them I was calling about a safety recall and they asked for the last eight digits of my vin. My car qualifies and this recall is not expired. I am taking my car in Monday and will see what happens then. I will also post an update to let anyone interested know what happens.

Well my car is at the chevy dealership right now. Hopefully when they inspect it they will find that it has this problem and it will be fixed for free.

Hope to hear some good news

I also have a '91 RS, just bought it a few months ago, it smells of gas pretty bad.

Checked my VIN, and it falls under the affected range ( 91 VIN's (last 8 digits) from ML100001 through ML200843 ), doesn't look like it has been recently repaired.

Hopefully they will still honor the recall, I want a new fuel tank

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

This recall is still as open as it was in 91. I just talked to GM about 2 weeks ago for another reason about my car and they ran my vin and without me even bringing up this recall they had requested I take my car in and have it taken care of for free. They said that their records indicated that my car was never serviced for this recall. As soon as this weather gets nice I'm taken it in.

Well i can verify this recall. I work at a GM Dealeship and i got into dealerworld and the recall is still in effect. 92C36 is the recall log number in our system, it should help some of you out when you got to take your vehicle in. Im having my 91 z28 done.

Here it is, in all its glory. The 36 page Recall Report details stating that GM has to fix it.

Good luck to all trying to get this fixed and hope you never have to take it this far.

That's BS. Call Chevy before you take it in. I'm sure that dealerships don't want to deal with this.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

Just bought my 91 Firebird, which is leaking from the filler neck. I called a local Pontiac/Chevy/GMC dealership and I was told that all recalls are in effect indefinitely. I mentioned the rumored 10 year expiration and he said he'd never heard of such a thing, and that they are required by law to honor all safety recalls for all vehicles they service.

My car has not been serviced for this yet, and he said the procedure is to bring the vehicle in and have it inspected (if the defect does not actually appear, it isn't replaced), if the defect indeed exists, the entire tank is replaced at no charge. I will be bringing mine in Monday, and hopefully the leak is due to this defect...

I just called, my car is a Van Nuys car, and it falls within the last eight on the vin as one that would be affected and the service guy told me he couldn't find anything. He also said he'd call me back in like an hour to see if he has found anything. I've bought cars from them before (Taconic Chevrolet) and they're nice, but now I feel like I'm about to get hosed.

MY 88 IROC has 3 pinholes in the solder joint. I used to be a gm tech, so I called a few buddies, but they can't find anything on their network crap. So I pulled my tank, and went to an auto parts store, got some stuff that looks like JB weld but made for gastanks, and I'm trying that currently.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

Damn dealerships, I took my car to a chevy dealership after GM had said that this was a open recall on my car. So I took it Wednesday and the dealership gave me a bunch of BS like "GM isn't going to pay for this" "this recall is only good for 10 years". So I left and called GM. They were'nt happy. GM called the dealership to see what was going on and they still refused to look at my car. So GM called other Chevy dealerships in my area and found one that would do the work. So I took it in this morning. They had my car in the garage for about 10 minutes, and the guy comes up to me and says there are no leaks. 10 minutes, do these people know what in the hell they are doing! I read all the original documents on this recall and it says that dealerships are to do a procedure in order to determine if the tank is leaking or not. There is no evidence that they took any time to properly check for leaks. I don't blame this on GM at all. It's the damn dealerships.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

here is the issue with why you may not have an open recall still
if your car already had this fixxed before you got it it will not have the recall notice anymore
for the hell of it i had our service manager look up my Rs and it came up as open recall for seat belt and fuel tank

im gonna have it fixxed next week but i kinda hope they dont replace the fuel pump as mine is now a tpi pump lol

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

Scroll down to the the 23rd page of the document it pulls out the 'VIN breaks" for the vehicles affected by the recall but intially in 1994 indicated less than 4% might need replacment. It tends to reason with another 10+ years than percentage might increase.

As for the dealers not knowing some of them might be hacks and not want to do it others might be ignorant of the recall when the industry went from paper sourced documents and then to internet based was just around the mid 90's when I was working at GM. We used to get a stack of TSBs and recalls mailed to us on the regular... then we started phasing them out. It might have gotten lost in the shuffle

A RECALL IS A RECALL... I should know Im a ASE Master Tech and an Expert rated factory tech at a Import dealer. I once had to put a fuel tank in a 1974 car in 2004 becuase it was never done by other shops becuase they just didn't want to.

You are not trying to get something for free its a safety defect... have it inspected... infact Ill likely get my 91 Z towed in. after I get the the new engine up and runing... but what sucks is I have to drain the tank I think its varnished over after 3 years

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

if you read the recall faxes, it clearly states over and over that it is "REGARDLESS OF AGE, OWNERSHIP, MILEAGE". I too tried this soon after I bought my 92 which falls dead in the middle of the last "8" recall numbers... dealership found it, stated the "10 year BS" called the gm supportline--they said the same thing... I dont understand. BELIEVE i'm printing all 36 pages and sending it in to the punk working the computer and his service manager (lard @$$ worthlessnesses). I'm pissed... about this and two other $700 repairs to my ignition switch and high-beam mechanism...neither lasted more than 8 months. It's hard to find quality these days--everyone knows GM is going down the tubes anyway. Lucky the 3rd gens are so f'n great looking, or else I may have ended up buying some RICE. so pissed... and I even told them, a recall is a recall. This origination recall paperwork states nothing of a 10 year limitation. that may be a liability window that will hold up in court though. who knows... STRENTH IN NUMBERS. Death to McKenney Chevrolet in Belmont, NC. have to h8. They wouldnt even look at it... that's okay, i dont mind getting high off volatiles while cruising.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

Yes, I've done this.

I was contacted when this first came out. I was easy to find as I am the orginal owner. This was a long long time ago...in the mid 1990's probably 96-97 or something like that.

I took my RS in figuring it would be a waste of time...but sure enough my car's filler neck was defective. My orginal Dealer replaced it and was nice about doing it. Took about two hours if I recall correctly. Dealer also stated at that time, they like to do these sort of things because GM has to pay them for it so it wasn't anything out of their pocket.

Best of luck to everyone with this.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

There's more than just one year that have this problem(based on my own personal example).

I have a 1989 formula 350 tpi built in Van Nuys and I my VIN does not qualify for the recall, but I *did* have pinhole leaks around the filler neck where it attaches to the tank.

I fixed it by forcing marine expoy into the holes and followed up with a liberal apllication on top of that. The fix has lasted for more than 10 yrs now.

I also put some rubber around the filler neck out near the boddy to keep it from flexing as I fill up with gas and hit bumps.
