Here's a stumper!

Alright, so this past few days I've noticed that my dash (I think) is making a high pitched squealing noise that varies with bumps in the road, how hot the car is and speed.

The higher my speep, i.e. 75mph, the more I hear the noise.

The more the bumps, i.e. the stupid little things on the freeway that are in between the lines, the more I hear the noise.

The higher the tempature guage is, well, I don't think that makes a difference or not.

Plus, I think it's coming from the passenger side of the car, but my boyfriend disagree's with me and says No, the drivers.

It's annoying the hell out of me to the point I'm NOT wanting to drive my baby... And that's a problem b/c it's my only car. Haha...

Any clues? It seriously sounds like high pitched chirping type of noise. And it's driving me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, and when I turn my radio up, (I maybe imagining this) even when my poor little thumper is all the way up, I can still here that damn noise.

Someone help a girl out before I blow my car up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i fixed that squeaking by putting some insulation under the dash pad right above the middle vents. you could try that. its a million times better now. no more squeaks

i had the same damn problem with my dash i got a dash mat and shoved all the cornors by the winsheild with a ruler so it rubes agains the carpet so the dash is not against the window. your dash is rubbing agains the window and since its that year especially the dash is probaly old material and its warn out up there from the sun. over the years some bolths may have lossened up and its not as firm as it used to be. how to fix in in ur situation i don't know i got a dash mat lol thats all i can say. a way you can tell when it makes the noise press real hard on the center of your dash and push twords your winsheild if its stops then its what i said witch it most likley is if not then i have no idea.

Pull the dash pad out and drive it. If the noise stops, it was the dash pad. If the noise continues, it'll be easier to pinpoint without the dashpad in the way.

are you sure it isn't wind noise coming from the small triangle pieces near the side mirrors? If that weatherstripping wears out, it'll make a whistle at high speed

That EXACT thing happened to me just after I installed my new rear shocks. Turned out I didn't tighten them far enough and they got loose and made a horrible high pitched squeak going over bumps. Came from the back of the car. Exactly what you're describing. It only takes a moment to check.. pull the carpet down in the back of the car and see if the nuts are loose on the top of the shock mounts.

Mmk...

First things first.

Drive minus dash pad.

If that doesn't work, I'll come back, pull out the rear carpeting and check my shocks... The *** ones just got done little more than a month ago.

If none of this works, ya'all should be seeing a newpaper Extra! Extra! "California girl blows up beautiful black Firebird."

Seriously... This thing is pissing me off... GrrRrRrRrrrr...

Thanks guys for the help... I'll post again and letcha know if I am carless or not...

or if you don't want the car.....well.....um.........I wouldn't mind it lol

but seriously, I would go and slowly take the dash apart here and there and add some of that home insulation stuff. Really fills up the gaps and makes a lot less noise Only costs $4.00 too!

I use home weatherstripping. It's basically some sponge/foam material attached to some tape backing. It really works well!

What I did

Hey guys...

So I tightened my rear shocks at the top... Nope, wasn't them. Although they were pretty loose! So I got them til they were nice and tight.

Drove to errand, STILL heard the chirping. After alot of cursing, I tore out my dash, in the mall parking lot. Talk about alot of funny looks.

Drove home, still chirping.

Drove somewhere else, on the phone, accidently bump my AC/Heat control thingies, guess what?

Chirping stopped.

What the funk is all I can say...

Oh yeah, I did stuff my dash with both insulation and did the speakers with poly fill (I got bored.)

Also did the back speaker wells and speakers themself... Oh my gosh. My interior seems 1000000000000000000000000x times quiter and my music sounds 100x times better.

Especially my dash. It seems just more solid.

I super-glued the heater panel back together... hehehehe... Til I get bored (later today) and go snab one from the 'Yards that is in better shape...

In the process of gluing it back together, I also damn near glued myself to my car. Haha. That woulda been fun to explain.

Blondes + Super Glue = Bad.

Thanks guys!

you know what..

i had an 84 z28 that did this exact same thing, same exact sounds /noise

i couldnt figure it out for the longest time and it was annoying the hell out of me!

know what it was ?

i was screwing around one day and noticed that i could push the bottom of my windshield from the inside,
it wasnt glued very well anymore due to age

air coming up through under bottom of windshield was flapping the vin plate ! faster you go the harder the air is forced past/under the vin plate, IE more noises from it, sometimes it would make a weird tick sound too, now and then, especially when slowing down the car after being at higher speed, it would start to do it at around 40 or so,

its crazy... but i bet you thats what it is with yours, im sure its a common thing on these older ones especially

check it

good luck

Will check around window... Do I just go around it w/ silicone??

Aaaaand... why would the speedo cable need greasing? Are you supposed to grease it? How do you grease it? Do you use the "General Automotive grease" (that's what it says on a tube in our shop.)

It's kinda sad... I have... Well, my dad has... all this car stuff and I don't know what even a quarter of it is. Come to find out, we even have an air compressor.

I had a noise like that for a while. Sounded like a squeek from the dash when the car went over bumps in the road - really bad on washboard roads. Took me weeks to find it. Accidently found it while adjusting my rear view mirror, its set screw had loosend up just enough to let it vibrate on the mounting button on the windshield. Tightened set screw - noise gone.
