Hatch Will Not Close, motor problem?

I've done a few searches but here goes.

My hatch motor is in the down position and it just hums. Also the hatch will not latch. The lock and key cylinder works fine. I can push the latch with a screwdriver and unlock it with the key. But I cannot push the deck lid down far enough for it to catch. I have tried pulling up on the motor but am reluctant to pry up on it a screwdriver. Any help would be awesome.

Also when I pull up on the motor it sounds like its binding down or something, just thought I'd put that in there.

take a look at the motor, bring the hatch down so you can see where it connects with the motor, there is a little plastic piece that the hatch "hook" taps to let the motor know to go down. Tap this little plastic piece down with a screwdriver, if the system is working the motor will come back up. If it doesn't then you may have a stripped nylon guide.

The last post has it correct. If the motor runs without moving up OR down then the gear nut is broken. A new gear nut is available from your dealer. I also stock them as well. While you're at it pull off the hatch surround plastic trim panel and check the unit visually. If the motor housing is broken it should be replaced. Also grab hold of the latch portion and see if you get movement. If it moves up/down but not side-to-side or front-back, then that clear plastic motor housing has broken where the 3 screws attach it ot the frame. If you get side-to-side or front-to-back movement, then the plastic guides in the tracks are bad. All are available from my web site. All the part numbers and instructions to repair the hatch pull-down unit are included in the Tech Article I wrote.

It will not move at all, its stuck.. It will move barely but thats under pressure from me wiggling it. I did see a small crack in the clear housing, would that cause the motor to run but no movement? I can't break it free.

If the motor runs without moving up OR down then the gear nut is broken.
A small crack, no. It is just the tell-tale sign of future problems. A broken housing can cause the gear nut to fail. But the reason why the motor runs without moving is a bad gear nut. There is two common ways that they fail. The worm drive of the motor can shred the teeth on the OD of the gear. Since the teeth are bad the motor will just spin and not turn the gear nut. The gear nut is plastic and is what drives up and down the part I call the "lift rod". The second failure mode is the gear nut will shear in half. In this case the motor will still turn the gear nut, but the inner threaded portion of the gear nut had sheared off from the part that gets turned by the motor. Again it won't be able to drive the lift rod up or down. It is just that simple. A cracked motor housing can cause the gear nut to loose contact with the worm drive of the motor. Bad guides can cause the latch portion of the pull-down motor to jam or be out of proper alignment. This puts extra stress on the plastic gear nut.
