The Paint Project has Begun...UPDATED 1-21-06

Hey everyone,
I just started the prep work on my 91 RS Convertable last night. Today, I made a website where I am going to document the steps I take as I do them. I dont know if I would use what I am writing as a guide. Afterall, this is my first paint project. But mabey it will be able to help someone on there project, or at least give you guys something to read to kill time.

Check out the website in my sig for pics & info. I will let you guys (and gals) know of any updates I make to it.

Updated the site. Lots of progress. I am wondering if I should take the convertable top frame off? I imagine I will have to remove the trunk lid and tonneau cover anyway.

I will be taking the door handles, key cylinders & door latches off soon. How do I keep the doors from flying open when being moved? Can I just tie them together with a rope or bungee?

I don't know if it's me or not, but all I see are a few pictures. How about what you've done to get it to look like it is. What color your going with next. Just my 2 cents.

Looking great man!

Is that a factory new bumper cover and chin spoiler on there? If so, how much did that run ya'?

Keep up the good work!

The bumper cover is used. I had to drive it for 6 months with it on there, so I sprayed it with black spray paint to make it look a little better. The chin spoiler is new GM, I think it was about $180 from GMPartsDirect.

I am going to use a chemical stripper on the front & rear bumpers. I am worried that I will find cracks in the front bumper when I do. If its cracked, I am going to get a new one from GM.

P.S. - I did more work today. Check out the updates on the site.

Keeping it white. I was thinking of putting black stripes on it... But decided to keep it simple & clean.

Probably self-etching. I will be using high build on the doors & panels.

not to say anything bad, props for doing it yourself but i wouldnt be getting water on the bodywork or bare metal, bondo is porse and will absorbe water much like cement and if its not fully dried and you primer over it you can trap the water in it and later youll have rust.. bare metal tends to start oxidizing as soon as it become uncovered and water is a catylist. other than that keep up the hard work, when you do it yourself its always more gratifying then spending lots of money and hoping its done right.

I went to the shop Saturday Morning. I spent about 1.5-2 hours with the manager talking about the project. He was able to talk me into a full basecoat/clearcoat job on the exterior. I am still going to stick with a single stage on the jambs & undersides of the panels. Which he is going to do this week!
The total job is going to cost about 1k more than I was planning on paying. I wanted to be in around 2k for paint & it will end up costing me 3k. Im a little upset about the total, but I am just going to deal with it. The jamb painting he is doing this week is going to be $1100. The exterior base/clear will be another $1200. Painting all of the loose pieces with base/clear will be $600. And probably $200 to repair that rear 1/4 dent.
As usual, I will get pics of everything as it happens.
