My A/C Delete Process - 24 Images inside

Introduction:

Iv'e never taken anything like this out of any car in my 20 years of life... give me a break if I did stuff wrong. Some things I didnt know what to do... I did read some of the posts on here of people taking thier A/C out and putting 1LE delete pulleys in I found the lower pulley very hard to remove and install so It wasnt done. As I read and asked questions I found it hard to follow thier concepts and advice because most people only posted thier finished set up and I wanted more images of the whole process and was very anxious to see images of others doing this, but found nothing. So for the next few minutes I will be showing you fellow third genners how I did it.. laugh if you will but I just wanted to show others that are of my age and have a lack of knowledge on this stuff how it looks like and how I went about doing this, hopefully others will learn not to make the same mistakes I did. Again please acknowledge and understand that I am still a novus.

Heres some pics of my 1LE AC DELETE PULLEYS a water pump and DOORMAN WINDOW motors all from pep boys... except the 1LE delete pulleys of course those I got from GM direct. (ALSO im selling the lower pulley if anyone wants to buy it, ill let it go for $40.00 pick up only)

Different looking window motor

I start by removing the canister and bending the $h1t out of the pipes that connect to this thing behind the radiator hahahah

As you may tell, I removed some pulleys before I started. Dont know why...

I then break the fiberglass housing and pull the ac core out

(PLEASE BE ADVISED! WEAR GLOVES!!!!! THAT FIBERGLASS IS ITCHY AND CAN CAUSE IRRATATION ON YOUR SKIN!) THAT SCREEN ALSO RIPPED MY SKIN!!!

Looks like some birds were building a nest down there...

I then took off the heater blower by unscrewing the housing off, this is much more easier once the AC canister and core and fiberglass crap are out the way... this is how it looks like when it is removed... much more room!!

Cleaned up the area a little, thenafter begin on the air pump removal and try to see how to remove the lower pulley..

Hmm

This is suppose to go down there.. but where and how do I take off that pulley?????

This appears very strange to me... so I try comparing it to some one elses finished set up to try to get an idea..

Can't figure it out, so I move on

I then install the heater box and that aint not easy task either it doesnt match up with MOST of the holes.. so I just screw in the ones that do (Also I forgot to put a gasket around the edges or gasket sealer) and install the blower fan and have a problem with it.. the fan blades are too long so I will cut the $h1t out of them ahaha

Problem:

Solution:

Grab a metal cutting tool and cut the blades to a lower length!! to my surprise it did not weaken the blades and are still extremely stiff.

The fan now fits and life can progress.

Hook all the switches and relays together, then I look at all the mess I made.. heheh

Done for now... I still have to completely seal the heaterbox and take that thing out of the front of the radiator.

Unbolting the top half of the heater box works almost as well as breaking it .

I love my V belt setup, I don't have all that crazy pulley crap to deal with. Either way, nice job, I love the metal finish heater box.

The condenser. Looks good. I'll be doing this shortly when I put headers on my car and get rid of all my smog/AIR crap at the same time.

I hope you pulled the smog pump, as the belt will rub against the stub on the front of it, and tear it up. Its only two torx bolts holding in the pump.

hehe...looks like you got that closeup of the smog pump pulley from my car!

....keep in mind that's an emissions pulley/pump, not an AC accessory. I'll be honest, I didn't have any trouble removing it. I never gave it a second thought, and to be honest, I don't really know how I did it since it wasn't a problem.

Here's better pic of the delete pulley. Note that it's only held on by two bolts. That should make life a little easier.

Ebay or the classifieds.

...but if you can find one in a junkyard it'll be a LOT cheaper. I've seen 'em go on Ebay for over a hundred.

...Oh, and cutting the blower fan DOES WORK. I tried several things that worked, but I'm currently running a cut up fan and it works FINE. PLENTY of air flow.

I don't know if cutting up the blower fan was absolutely needed.
when I did the whole ac delete to get my motor to fit I made a thick spacer out of a couple of thin pieces of wood and gasket material.I made it about half an inch thick.
I also used weatherstripping to seal up the heater box.

I also cut my fan. I have an extra blower motor with the smaller fan, BUT it used a different connector than my car so rather than rewire I decided to just cut the blades down. You can't merely swap the fan blades, you need the non-AC motor and fan blades together. Cutting seems easier than using some wood spaces IMO.

I tried the spacer thing too, but I had an extra fan, figured it was worth a shot. It worked just fine.

I have been looking for a blower box and can find one for a resonable price, and I dont know if they made many camaros without airconditioning let alone find one at a junkyard. Does anyone know if I could me a delete box out of my old box?

S10s in the late 80s/early 90s used the same non AC boxes.

I just did the box swap and cut the fan... but my question is how do you hook up the wiring?? Is it only one plug? I tried it and my fan doesnt work at all.
It was working before the swap though. any advice??

If you are not going to use that lower pulley, Ill give you $40 shipped for it.

I can get it for less than $40 plus shipping from GMPartsDirect.

What im planning to do now is. Rebuild the 305 SELL THAT and buy an LT1 and rebuild/bore/port that. So I'll sell the 305 with the ac delete pulleys.

I'll let you all know when that happends.

The S10 heater box looks similar, but is NOT the same! it will not directly replace the f-body non-a/c heater box. You can buy a blower motor fan blade for a non-a/c f-body at a regular auto parts store (it's similar to the a/c version, only shorter). I checked at advanced auto and they had one for about $18 in stock. I got one from a junkyard instead.

For the smog pump removal, on mine, you have to remove the 3 bolts holding on the pulley part first. Wedge a screwdriver between two of them and loosen the third, repeat until all 3 are loose and then remove completely. Next, remove the two bolts holding the smog pump to the bracket. At this point, you can either use the delete pulley OR you can simply go to a shorter serpentine belt and bypass it altogether. There's a great post showing the new routing without it and the exact length of the belt. I can try to find it again if anyone wants the link, or i can take a picture of mine.
