LED in Hvac fan switch

O.K. I was a little board today & i always have trouble seeing what position the **** is for fan speed during night hours. So i drilled thru the **** with a 1/16 drill.Mounted a green led in the back of the ****.Ran a wire to the hvac lamp( LED).So they're both on at the same time. The pic makes the led look bigger though.A little overkill, but at least now i can tell the position of the **** in relation to the blower fan speed.

I dig that a lot. How tricky is it to tap into the HVAC lighting?

Cool mod- does your car not have the light specifically pointed at the radio/HVAC controls like the firebirds do?

Some camaros had a light under the ac vent housing, though i never seen one with them, all camaros i seen have the housing for it there. Others have a overhead lamp in the mirrior but not all have this feature. So when you don't have eithier one your in the same boat as 84 1le.

Thats a cool mod. Never had thought of that, very nice and orginal.

.Tapping into the hvac light is just a matter of connecting the pos to pos & neg to neg. Both are LEDs so there isnt much of a risk of overloading the circut. The tricky part is drilling into the ****(front to back) without going thru the sides.

It points forward (towards you). The LED is actually in the backside of the ****.It doesnt go all the way to the front(too big).I plugged the hole up front with a clear plastic bar thats press fit flush. When its off you can barely tell its there. The led is meant to illuminate the position the **** is pointing to with regard to fan speed. My car doesnt have that light behind the AC vents & i wanted something with a little more built in look.Plus ive never seen one of the "mystery" lights in operation. So i dont even know what/where it illuminates

my "mystery" light still operates but it doesnt light too much. it makes the top of the HVAC and stereo unit lighter but thats about it. makes the interior look a bit nicer but doesnt actually seem to have an actual use. maybe 15 years ago it was brighter but it seems pretty dim to me.

That mystery light in the pic above reminds me of the fiber optic "light" for the ash tray.Or is there actually a bulb there?

Some, but not all ashtray have them. There is a fiber optic line that runs from the shift indicator housing to the ash tray. The fiber optic line picks up the light from the indicator lamp & carries to the other end in the ash tray. You can see the tip lit up,but not the tray. Its suppose to illuminate the tray in the darkness, but its impossible to tell.Maybe a pic will help.
