A couple of things to check. Make sure that the hatch release fuse is good. Check for location of it in your owners manual. On Camaro and Firebird it should be in the #11 position (third column from the left, third row down). Since your car is a 5 speed, try pulling up two clicks on the parking brake lever. That will ground the switch so it will pop the hatch. Normally you only have to do this if the engine is on, but it may solve your problem. Another thing to look at is that the ground wire is still connected between the 10mm screw holding the hatch release solenoid to the pull-down motor and the ground location below on the body. This must be there because the track guides electrically isolate the solenoid from ground. The solenoid only has a single hot wire going to it (black in color).

Are you hearing a click at all when you press the switch? It could be that the hatch pull-down unit is out of adjustment and needs to be adjusted up or down slightly by loosening the three 13mm bolts attaching it to the body. Mark the current location of the pull-down motor to the body so you know how far you've moved it. On Firebirds, especially with the HEAVY urethane spoiler it is sometimes tough to get the hatch pull-down unit adjusted correctly.
